Hey

I've got a 120L tank and currently have a pair of rainbow gouramis and 8 neon tetra. Im not planning to add anything else right at the moment but I plan on my next installment being some guppies. I saw some wonderful snakeskin guppies at LFS.

Im just wondering for the size of the tank, how many guppies would be a nice number. I want male and female. I do intend to have as may fish in their as possible and a variety of species. This means I dont want 'too many' of any particular type but I dont want 'too little' either

Cheers

Just to clarify, do you want the guppies to complete the tank, or to leave you enough room for something else?

No I want plenty of room for other fish too. I was thinking, 2 male guppies and 3 female. But that could be too many? If so maybe i'll get just 1 male and 2 female. Or possibly 2 males?? :S

If you are going to get a mix of genders, go for 1M:2/3F. You will probably have fry issues, but at least the females will not be too stressed out by the male's, er, "attentions". Remember that female guppies are noticeably more drab than males.

If you are going to get all males, then I'd say get 4/5, so that the dominant male does not constantly hassle the other.

Either way, there won't be "plenty" of room for something else, but you'll probably be able to get something.

So, realisticly, If I was to get 5 male guppies, in a 120L, alongside a male and female rainbow gouramis and 8 cardinal tetra, how many more fish could I get. i know it depends on the size of the fish etc, but i dont intend on getting anything really large, so a guesstimate would be nice!

8 tiger barbs??

Tiger barbs are very nippy little blighters, I have personally steered clear of them.

I would probably go for something small, like chilli rasboras or celestial pearl danios. x 8.

And I would probably call it a day there.

Excellent, they have some nice pearl danios in the LFS aswell. So I think it will be 5 male guppies + 8 danios and then i'll leave it at that.

Thanks for the advice

I wouldn't buy any guppies no matter how pretty they look. They are so over bred that its weakened them and they never seem to live long!

If you use the old 1 inch per gallon rule, you would have room for a few fish since your tank is a 32 gallon right? Also, Rainbow Gouramis are Dwarf Gouramis right? They get up to 3 inches so (2) would take up 6 of your 32 gallons. Neon Tetras are roughly 1 inch when full grown so that's another eight spent on (8) Neons. Guppies are around 2 inches full grown so adding (5) would spend another 10 inches.

If you added (5) guppies you'd still have up to 8 inches of fish that you could add. In my humble opinion another (8) Neon Tetras would make your school of (16) and that would look awesome.................or you could add a school of (8) Glowlight Tetras. They go very well with the other fish you have, especially the Neons.

Thanks for your input, I had thought about adding more cardinals, they do look awesome just with 8 and i imagine 16 would look brilliant. Definately worth thinking about

cheers
