If you can afford the massive price tags placed on the Solaris (I believe £2500-£3000 for a 36" unit) then go get one, but the aqua rays are no good on their own. They help intensify light in the small area they are directly above. T5 are really nice all round lighting that has a number of cons like any lighting system. If you get it right then there are not really many things that can go wrong and all options of live stock are available. Halides allow you deeper tanks and provide a nice aesthetically pleasing shimmer, but if you have a shallow tank with space above for the T5 tubes they are not really worth it. The heat issue has a number of ramifications; the tank water gets warmer than it should if you are not careful, evaporation increases which increases the salinity of the water (it is worst if you couple the heating of the halide with fans to try and keep the tank cool). It is ironic that I am now suggesting that halides are probably not the best option as I have just ordered one for my reasonably shallow tank .
thanks for the inputs! they're really helpful i don't think i'd go for Solaris as you said since the price is crazy. LED supply does seem to provide them for decent prices. only problem is alittle DIY which i'm still clueless about
