Hello!

I was wondering if you guys could answer a few questions I have :good:

Some of these are probably going to sound obscure being a total newbie so apologies in advance!

1) Ive read quite a bit about things like snails and worms in fishtanks(which to be totally honest sound kinda  )I was wondering how this comes about? threw the fish themselves, the tank or the plants? anyway how could I aviod getting wildlife other than fish??

2) On a scale of 1 to 10 how great is your passion for fish? the reason I ask is im sort of a person whos very cautious of something before I buy but then grow to love something.I would really like fish but basically I want to know how does it feel having a tank of fish that you have to look after but you get to see swimming around ect ect!

cheers :)

A little over a year ago I had no fish....... today I have 4 tanks. I post on several fish forums, tell my coworkers all about my tanks, (even though they don't care) spend several hours a week on tank maintenance and spend all of my spare money of fish eqiuptment. (and several dollars that aren't actually "spare") I am a member of my local Aquarium Club and I am currently on a mission to visit ALL of the local fish stores. (2 more to go) I also make it my buisness to get to know the owners and employees of my favorite fish shops. One of the fish forums I post on is a local one, through that forum I have traded fish food, bought a second hand tank, and procurred a large bottle of Prime at a wholesale price!

I am, I think, completely addicted. :good:

1. Depending on the type of snail you can purchase them, or sometimes they hitchhike in on plants.
- Pond snails are common hitchhikers and are usually considered "pests" because they reproduce so quickly.
- Malaysian Trumpet Snails can also hitchhike, or can be purchased. Like pond snails these guys reproduce rapidly, but because they are substrate diggers they are considered beneficial by some since they help stir the gravel.
- Apple/Mystery snails can be purchased in most LFS and unlike most other snails are not hermaphrodites so you would need a male and female for them to breed. These guys can actually get quite big, which makes them a bit more interesting than smaller species in my opinion.

2. Passion rating: ~9 I used to think of aquariums as smelly lamps because I had seen so many uncared for ones growing up. Then when my mother purchased a fish tank, and asked me to help do research for it I really started to fall in love with the hobby. It can be as simple or complex as you want it to be, and there is so much to learn and try which helps keep it interesting. Currently planning out quite a few tanks (and an entire "fish room") for the apartment I plan to rent by next year. Who needs furniture...I'd rather have the tanks! lol

1) Pest snails usually come with live plants, but might sometimes be bagged with the fish, although if that is the case you will usually notice the snail and take it out before adding it to the tank.

2) 8.5 I love fish a lot, but they are also hard work!

1. Some snails can be quite handy, I have trumpet snails that breed and provide live food for my loaches.

2. 9.5 started with a friends old tank, now have 5 ! - Watching a sparkly clean tank with lively fish rooting around beats the pants of a TV soap opera.

1) snails come in on plants generally. worms vary, the most common being planaria, tiny harmless white worms, that generally only appear if theres an excess of food, if you've overfed and theres some left on the gravel, also if somethings died...gross i know...they'll feed off that as well. usually a good gravel vaccuum and water change gets rid of those.

2) 11!

The snail question has been answered already, and for the second one - having an aquarium is not the easiest hobby around, but the rewards will far exceed the effort. You will find yourself sitting and watching the fishes (better than whats on tv!) I've had mine about four months now, and am getting a second (larger) tank in September. :good:

If done right fish keeping can be very rewarding and whatching them swim around is very relaxing. If done wrong, DONT GIVE UP! Most problems can be fixed and yes it takes alot of time and effort but its very worth it. Mines deffinatly a 10! :good:

honestly, i couldnt play world of war craft anymore so i bought fish.. now i dnt want a million tanks.. i just want really awesome fish :) i talk to everyone about my fish and my knowledge of fish and people dont care, thats alright.. my fish listen to me :) my family, friends, and boyfriend would say im addicted

If your considering keeping fish, then go for it. It'll be pretty cr@p and boring for the first few weeks while your cycling the tank and cautious of how much money your spending. But as soon as you get your first fish in there, it'll all be worth it. Im pretty sure i speak on behalf of most people on here, but the amount of time that you'll spend sitting watching your fish is unbelievable. They do take quite a alot of maintenance, and require a fair bit of money to start with, but once everythings sorted it definately pays off.

Must add though, friends and girlfriends/boyfriends may call you sad...but i bet you catch them watching your fish :p

Thanks for the advice guys :) Its funny you should mention bf and gf's because its actually my gf who suggested I get them! Shes going to be getting gold fish I think but whne I do things I like to go the whole way(or at least most of it)

Ill be honest, the other wildlife does put me off a slight bit because its made me realise its gonna be a bigger thing than I thought, but more rewarding!
