Thank you so much everyone for your advice, after adding my first set of fish, my water levels rocketed but after numerous water changes as advised here everything is back to normal, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 20

If it wouldnt of been for you guys/gals this would of undoubtedly gone all wrong,

My Mollies and Platys are really actively swimming around, all together and look really really happy, in my wildest dreams i didnt think it would be sooo great, i really cant believe the change since a few days ago.

Thankyou to the person who advised me to get another molly to tone down aggression(sorry terrible with names), it worked a treat and they are all getting on sooo well.

BTW - I added the fish last Sunday, how long will i have to wait before adding more fish?? i tested the water yesterday evening and again just now, and it seems to be sticking at 0 throughout, except the nitrate, but i can just do another water change for this

Hiya,
IMO you should wait a week after your readings go down and stay down. also only add fish in small quantities, ie 1 or 2 a week, constantly taking readings to see you haven't got a mini cycle, which hopefully you will not. Time is the most important thing here in increasing bateria culture. On a different note isn't this place great, No matter how long one has been keeping fish, there are so many tips of doing things better...Good luck..

Mo. :D

Hi Mo thank you,

I will wait and take my tests again before i go to make sure its still safe,

what you you recommend that i add, i want some colour ideally, and was thinking of an angel fish as they are gorgeous, but didnt know if it would go in my tank with the 3 mollys and 2 platys, my tank is a 27.5gal, and is exactly 18" tall, 13 1/2" deep, and 31 1/2" in length.

How many would i need to buy for them to be happy, as i know some fish prefer to be in groups? and how big do they grow??

Thanks

Hey Pandapops!! I'm so glad that it's all working out for you! (and I"m also glad that my advice was the right one ... whew! :p ) When mollies and platies are happy they really are great fish to have. I did just recently add two very small angels to my tank and really really like them... they get along well with my mollies and platies and are fun to watch. You just have to be aware ahead of time that they will outgrow your tank and you'll need to upgrade and expand down the road. (but that's never a bad thing is it  ). Some angels are more aggressive than others so you need to research and get the right ones for a community tank. Have you thought about getting some time of bottom feeder or aglae eaters? Useful guys to have... just do your research.. .some get extremely huge!!!

Good luck!! Keep posting on here... you'll learn something new everyday!

arghhh!!! had to edit too many times!! wayy too early to be posting lol

Hi Boozybears,

Yes is was great advice and completely improved the social atmosphere in my tank, i didnt realise the angel fish got soo big, is there anything else you could recommend that is as beautiful as angels (as i havent the room for a larger tank)?

I thought about getting a bristlenose catfish, but was advised about leaving it for ages, so there is enough food for them at the bottom, otherwise i'd have to buy separate food altogether,

Also would you advise getting any more platies as my two used to swim around together but stay separately now, they still look happy but i thought it was nicer when they swam around

Thanks again

Hi panda,

I forget what you all have in your tank by now... but you should have room for at least one more platy. Mine don't school together all the time but they do seem to enjoy each others company and 'hang out' together a lot. :) I have a rubber-lipped pleco who will stay small (max 4-5 inches). He's great!! I've had him for almost a month now and he's just starting to get brave and come out during the day but boy you should see him go when he's out! Sooo funny.. zipping all over the tank. So far he seems to be getting enough algae to eat from the tank and decorations. I do drop in an algae wafer every few days but I suspect the rest of the piglets are eating it.

You could check out tetras for colourful additions to your tank. They're small, school together and are fun to watch.... just make sure you get at least 5 of them. There's many types to choose from.. I have cardinals which are very pretty

Hope this helps!

Val
