There are total of three rescues in my care at this time. All were suffering some kind of infection due to poor water quality and conditions . As many betta lovers know something is just not sinking in with petshops and many other people in this world when it comes to the proper care of bettas. Delusions that bettas are happy in tiny, cold, unfiltered bowls have been widely spread throughout the world. In pet stores all over you see poor bettas suffering in tiny cups, so filled with rotting food and feces that they have trouble breathing, their tails are rotting off, and the water levels are so low sometimes that the poor fish have to lay on their sides just to stay covered. I have seen bettas kept in cups so tiny that they are forced to keep their bodies curved, the cups are too small for them to do something as simple as straightening out mad.

I don't know what's worse, how they're kept in stores or how people are told to keep them at home. It's commonly said that bettas love being in small spaces, that they're unhappy in anything bigger then like a 1/4 gallon, and they don't need filters or heaters because they're very hearty fish and are very hard to kill. The facts are that none of those statements are true. Bettas originated from rice paddies in southeast asia. These rice paddies may be shallow but are realitivly large and the bettas are free to swim from one to another. They are not confined to little 1/4gallon circles, so what makes people think thats what they would be happy in? rolleyes

I am on a mission to educate people throughout the country about the proper care of bettas. I will be running a rescue and rehabilitation center for these little guys and I will begin with educating local petstores around me.

You are right! Also, many people say that bettas don't need filters because they can breathe air out of a labyrinth organ, which is true, but they still need filters. Filters not only provide aeration, but they also provide a place for beneficial bacteria to grow. It is a huge myth that fish only need filters to aerate the tank.

I volunteer at this pet store near my house, and this lady came in, saying that she felt bad for her betta, which was in a small vase. Eventually, after explaining the nitrogen cycle to her, she left the store with a 10 gallon tank for her betta.

I was so happy, I know that betta will be happy as well.

Great topic! Keep it up! :good:

It's great to have someone speak up about this, because, you're right, I'm sure they do not enjoy being kept in such tiny spaces. It would be like a person living in a tiny closet their whole life. Uncomfortable and cramped. :( Anyways, good idea, spreading the word!

Also, the ammonia would build up a lot, and you would pretty much get poisoned. Same thing happens to fish. It bothers me when people say, "Oh, we have to stop the animal cruelty! Cats and dogs suffer daily!" But then, fish probably suffer more than any other animal on the planet, and people don't even realize they're doing it.

Yeah, it sickens me. It's just so WEIRD how people go all like, "Oh, Bettas LIKE small spaces so THAT'S WHAT I'M DOING AND YOU'RE WRONG FOR KEEPING THEM IN BIG TANKS WHERE THEY'LL GET SCARED!!!" and then they turn around and go all, "Oh, cats! Dogs! They're in tiny cages! Help them! AUGGGGGGGHH!" :(

Exactly! Bettas eat, they breathe, they feel, just like any other animal. So why are their needs ignored? Got forbid a dog, car or ferret are shoved in something way to small for them and left to die, but no one cares when they see a shelf full of dead bettas, they think "oh who cares, they're just fish!"

Bettas aren't just fish!! I mean, any other fish can be "Just a fish" for all I care, but most other fish are actually TREATED somewhat properly!!!! D:<

Bettas are so wonderful.... But, yet, people just stick 'em in bowls, they survive a few months, or maybe even a year (although I know one person who kept it in a bowl & changed the water once a week & it survived for like 6 years.... They got it when they were 3.... And then they went on a 1-week vacation and their aunt supposedly "gave it away to a poor little kid who didn't have any pets" while they were gone!! I mean, it's obvious that the fish died of starvation; no need to sugar-coat it!!), and then, they think that's a normal lifestyle, and get a new one!!

All because, supposedly, "Bettas like small spaces!!!" Ugh! D:<

They Do like small spaces.

But Me personally Would NEVER put a betta in a cup of some sort.

Tbh.

LFS say "They can live in bowls" Etc Etc, But They're just trying to make quick Money.

if i get this Job for work experiance in A&D I Will tell the buyer's straight what they're dealing with.

Yeah, I know. XD BUTBUTBUT I've had Bettas who prefer larger spaces. This is not all of them, however, and I'm going to put some more plants in my other 10-gallon because my male Betta seems to enjoy laying on his side under the plants on the sand. :/

All you need to do is plant it up right, and.... Voila! Happy Betta! ^_^ Lots of things to explore, and a good, large tank. :D

My betta went pyschopathinc in my 60 Litre tank  'Convicted for 4 murder's He was.

Bare in mind the ank did have a few plants in it :S

Many male bettas actually get pretty stressed out in large tanks. Everyone thinks they're being wonderful by providing their betta with a 10gal or larger tank, but in reality male bettas have a natural instinct to patrol their territory and having a large tank to patrol doesn't give the betta a lot of time to rest because they are constantly guarding such a large space. This can cause them to get very stressed out. I feel that the perfect tank size for a betta is between 2.5 - 5 gallons.

I Know what you mean. But i was ment to be getting him a new home 5.5 gallon ) but as i was about to get him a new tank he showed symptoms of dropsy.. :-(

My Mom doesn't really allow me to have smaller tanks, because they're less stable, and I wanted tankmates for my new Betta, so.... If you want tank mates, bigger tanks are the way to go. You'll have to make sure there's lots of hiding places, though. I'm planning to plant up my new 10-gallon tank with LOTS of plants once my Dad allows us to spend money at Big Al's again. XD (On Boxing Day we spent just under (like, $293 or sommat) $300. XD)
