im thinking about combining a 20 gal and a 55 gal together. also what are some good brands?

What do you mean by combining a 20 gal and 55 gal together?
Are you adding the contents of those two tank to a bigger tank, or are you using the heaters out of those two tanks to heat a bigger tank?

If you have two different size/ wattage heaters in the same aquarium, the higher wattage heater will work more. In big tanks, you have two heaters that are the same wattage and have one heater at each end of the tank.

I always found Rena heaters to be very reliable but other brands have gotten better over the years. Look for a heater with a decent warranty, one or two years is common nowadays.

The Fluval range of heaters are very reliable and can accommodate large aquariums. There is a small screen on the front of them that turns blue if the water is cooler than the set heater temperature and which turns red if the water is warmer than the set temperature. This effectively removes the need for a separate tank thermometer.

You should always have a separate thermometer in the aquarium just in case the heater malfunctions.

Ohh so 2 same wattage heaters. I was joking about combining two heaters together
