Hi Guys/Girls

Just a quick question to begin with, I have searched the forums and found a few threads about tank repair just would like to ask the obvious again as i feel sick at the moment for cracking it and im sure repairs work but just paranoid as its on a first floor flat so cant afford 100gal plus of water to spew out over the floor!! :)

Anyway problem I have is i brought a second hand tank which was fine no cracks or anything but its been in the backgarden at my inlaws while i get a stand ready for it, its currently on an iron stand with a sheet of ply/foam under it, however today i went to see it and there is a crack running down the middle long ways about 20" i would say

So the question is what is the best way to repair this? patch inside, sheet underneeth? and also should i do this once ive moved it rather than repair and then move

Any opions would be a help, curently im sitting here in disbelief that i have cracked it!!

Cheers anyway people

Dave

I would prob look into how much a pane of glass that size is and if it is viable to completely change the bottom. I had the same problem with a smaller tank and thus far have not repaired it as im not sure if a repair by me will survive. Silicone is used to join the panes together so it might be possible to repair the crack with this on both sides but it will always will be a weak point!

from personal experience i had a similar issue. the way i solved the problem of cracking the bottom of my 4ft tank was to have a sheet of glass the same thickness cut to size - used plentyy of aquarium silicone on the bottom of the exisiting and pressed the new sheet onto the old (silicone spread evenly on bottom and plenty of it) then siliconed all the edges with a good bead left to dry added water gradually - never had another prob
hpe this helps

Thanks for that guys

I will have to look into the cost of a sheet of glass, I have to say I don't know why a small patch wouldn't work but it just worry's me with the size of the tank I would feel better knowing I had covered the bottom again.

Cheers Guys

A small patch of glass doesnt have the integrity of a full piece. For a tank that size, if you work out the volume and the pressure exerted i'm sure youll agree a full repair over a patch up makes sense!!

I had a 6x2x2 crack when I brought it upstairs. I put a 10mm new base on the bottom and an internal patch on it. While one or the other might have worked, I decided on the principal of not wanting to re do the job. Touch wood, it has lasted 3 years with no problems.

Hi thedc5 :)

I'm going to move your thread over to the Hardware and Do It Yourself section.

Good luck fixing up your tank. :D

Hi all,
I have recently experienced the same problem, 6ft X 2ft X 2ft Cracked Bottom and i dont understand how or why .... everythign was level, on a stand, on ply and styrofoam...

the main question is how best to repair..

the crack runs from left to right , on the base glass, lost all my fish as it must have happened over nite, so was devastated...

please advise best solution, i have been advised to get a wire mesh glass, and stck to the base, with of course loads of silicon, but i need to know if this will work..

thanks in advance.

Hello,

Personally, I would replace the whole sheet with new one. In this case, I would go with slightly thicker glass.

See my post in http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/401461-repairing-a-tank/ for some info..

As it happens, I've just acquired a 4 foot tank with exactly the same problem, so you know what I'll be doing next week..

In my experience, patching a damaged tank **may** work, but I've seen too many long term disasters to recommend this approach.

The process of doing a proper repair is actually very easy, just time consuming. I've done quite a few tanks over the last few years and have had total success in every case.

Good luck.. just ask if you have any queries..

Bodge99.
