If you look through the side of the tank to the other side (down the length of it), is your water crystal clear?
I didnt know if its the length of water that makes it not crystal clear.
Mines greenish and has been for over a year now. Nothing I do changes it???
Just wondered if yours are the same?

well ever since i got my fx5 the tanks been alot clearer and its jus about crystal clear to the end.

It's prob floating algae in your water. Try to do more frequent water changes and it might clear up a bit. You could try leaving the lights off completely for one day every week and this might help kill some of it off.....although I don't know if your fish would appreciate this

Sorry to hijack the thread, but Sam what do you think of the fx5? I'm in the planning stages of a 180-250 gallon tank and was wanting the opinion of someone with that filter, since it's so new.

i was told it wasnt the quietiest but its about a foot from my head when im in bed and i cant hear a thing.


my tank always had a slight mist too it too but now its damn near perfect.

I've got 2 Rena XP3's

Even with real plants or fake plants its never perfectly clear.
The tanks only spose to have one filter, so ineffect im doubled.

I've done all the lights out thing, didnt do anything.

Tried carbon in the filter, no good.

Got a UV steriliser, doesnt clear it up.

Possibly green spot algae on the glass? May also just be the way the water is being refracted. Place a white piece of paper on one end of the tank and look through the other. My 120gl has a slight brown haze to it when looking the length of it but, when I place a white piece of paper at the opposite end, the brown haze goes away. I just think it's how the glass/water bend the light.

I can never see all the way to the end of my tank...that's because whenever I go near the tank my fish all swim up because they think they will get fed! Haha, I will take a look tonight and see if I notice any discolouration but I think I would remember if I thought something wasn't quite right.

How many liters per hour do your filters cycle? I only have a 4ft (75gal) tank and before I added a second filter, I had problems w/suspended algae. My tank now cycles 9 times per hour. Now, if you have plants you may not want that much cycling, but it's a thought.

Otto cats. I've seen where many have said that they do not eat green spot algae but, that's all mine eat. i have 5 in a 55gl tank and they have plenty of green spot algae to eat and have been alive in there for about a year and a half now.
