This is the tank. What would you stock it with?

For coldwater, White Clouds or Zebra Danios. It isn't remotely big enough for goldfish I'm afraid.

Thanks never seen white clouds will look them up. At the mo it has 2 rock mountain shrimp and a very small plec that was my friends he is tiny and hasnt grown at all since she had him I think she said he is a butterfly plec. Are these small or slow growing?

I'm afraid I have never owned a plec as most of the commonly available ones do grow very large and I haven't the tankspace for them . Your best option is to ask in the main tropical section or better yet, the catfish section as they will be able to tell you more about plecs than I can. From what little I do know, I don't think butterfly plecs grow particularly massive, but it's best to ask in the catfish section just to check. Post a picture of him too so they can help you make sure he really is a butterfly plec, if he isn't and turns out to be one of the bigger species, then you may have to rehome him.

White clouds are pretty , active little fish, there is a gold coloured variety as well. You could mix both colours for an interesting effect ( they will still school together as they are only a colour morph of the same fish )

Thanks I will ask the shop, this one is tiny about the size of a 20p and hasnt grown yet for some strange reason. The shop I spoke to a while ago said if you buy a fish and it gets too big for the tank they will exchange it for a smaller one, not sure wether this is a good idea or not

HA! In which case they'd be using you as a growing service. You grow the fish, then take it back when it gets too big, they replace it with a small one. They can then sell the big one for a much higher price because it's mature and full grown. You could pay up to 25 quid for a big plec, but only 5-7 for a small one for example.

I really wouldn't ask a shop if I were you. Many shops employ people who are there simply to catch fish and sell them and don't always know how to correctly identify a lot of well known species, and since many plecs can look alike at first glance, they could make a mistake . You'd get a better result by taking a good photo and posting it in the Catfish or main tropical section on here. They have plenty of experience and will be able to quickly tell you what sort he is and how big he's likely to get.

Butterfly plecs are a cold water plec, they need very good quality water, they grow to about 2.5 inches max. Their only draw back is the slightest change in ph or lowered quality and they keel straight over. I've had a couple, they do a lovely little 'dance' up the side of the tank eating the algae.
