60x24x24 Tank - Danger?

G'day,

Here's one I made earlier,a stand for my 425 ltr, and to make this stand was only about £20 all up. Its plenty strong enough as the weight is dispersed all over and it has a base of 2.5 " and then insulation. It hasnt budged at all in 10 months.

I'm just about to start making a stand for my 84x30x24 which is way heavier but this stand will have more legs and a flat base.

Wee bit of a problem, just cant upload pic here, but i will post it as my id pic

Cheers

Hello again

Ive changed my pic to one of the stand im not to sure how long as it takes to update pic, hopefully soon.
I was going to go down the concrete block road, but it wouldnt be the nicest thing to look at,and once the tanks on there and filled up,its going to be very difficult to change. Actually thinking about it, it wouldnt be that hard to conceal the blocks.

My thoughts would be as follows:

Top base- a sheet of ply about 1" thick, with foam on top.

the blocks set out as you desribed but inset 1" from each edge

bottom base: plywood again, same as the top. If you are in the uk(?) b&q have sheets 6ftx 4ft for about £12 ish which cut in half, they do on site for free, that would be your top and bottom base sorted.

Now,to cover the blocks, you can make a simple "u" shape to fit that will cover up the blocks, with some pine maybe?

If you set the blocks say 3" back from the front edge you could secure batons top and bottom and a support at either end which would make a frame to attach doors on.

I'm making this up as I go,can you tell?!! but it would work with out spending to much, and like me only having reasonable carpentry skills.

Cheers mate

and continuing on, I forgot that you wanted a middle shelf ,easy done and you can easily ad edging to the plywood and i see that you are in London, so you know all about b&q! sorted. just might be worth varnishing the top base for obvious reasons. gotta crawl into bed now,way to late again

To be honest concrete block is a bit over the top for a 5x2x2 and adding a lot of unnessesary weight to the floor, for a tank of that size a stand built from 3x2" timber and faced with some 12mm plywood is more than ample.

thanks CFC, yeh i was taken by suprise for some reason to learn each block weighs about 20kg, that would make a total of 360kg

Thanks for this fella, i am giving all this thought and find it exicting at the same time i can perhaps learn some basic DIY skills. Am trying to get a variety of advice, both on here and from some friends that work in the building trade.

Its all exciting, feels like my first proper fish project.

I am even thinking about getting a slightly bigger tank than a 5x2x2, need to do a thread on that later

yep, seems that way

I was at Travis Perkins today and the guy was telling me that i could easily get away with medium density blocks (which weigh a heck of a lot less) for 500 litres of water plus tank. My mate who's in the trade says the same thing, and medium density blocks are apparently used to hold far greater weight than a 500 litre fish tank.

Still keeping the idea of a stand built from 3x2 open but.....

also leaning toward using medium density blocks with 18mm wbp plywood on top

any thoughts on that method for the 5x2x2 ?

From this idea, it would appear the wood is going to be the most costly part

thanks
