I'm getting rid of my old 60l tank and replacing with a 180l tank,

My question is how do I go about switching my water, I gather that I want to get as much of the 60l of water into my new tank as possible. What about filling the rest of it? (can I fill it with fresh water in one go, or in stages) how will my fish be?

I should point out that this new tank can only go where my old one is, so there is no option to have both running at the same time.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

Hi
what type of filtration do you have in the 60L ?

if it is removable you can just put this into the new tank, along with the water and possibly the gravel if you want this aswell
then I would simply top the tank up with dechlorinated water that is a similar temp to that of your tank water

Hi,

I have a Fluval3 at the moment in the 60l, I plan to run this along with the new filter system for about a week, would that be right?

Think i would run the old filer for about 1 month, if at all possible you can swap filter media and put old into new? Obviously this isnt usually possible, depends what your using and changing to and size differance etc.

As for water change you just need something large and water bearing to temporaraly hold the old water BUT as fish are involved the container must be clean. I use several stacker boxes, home brew barrels, things ike that. How many fish do you have? It may be wise to consider rehoming them in something on the floor inforont of the new tank with the old filter running them so you can top up the new tank etc?

I think at minimum you should try and 20% fill the new tank then top up slowly at about 5% per 2-3 days, looks a mess while its part full but better safe than sorry!

What does everyone else think?

It is exciting getting a bigger tank :hyper: ,
Ive done two upgrades first one was from juwel 180 to juwel 260, for this a bought a large plastic bucket for my fish used the 180 tank water and an air line for them, the bucket held well over 50% of my tank water, then i set up new 260 tank filled with conditioned 24-26 deg water then slowly added fish and old water, i also used the old mature media.

Second upgrade i did 6 weeks ago was from a 60l with a hob mature filter to a juwel 124,
I set up the new tank ran it set up for a few days with conditiond water to make sure all was working and temp was ok, then i baged up fish like you would at a shop, added as much old tank water as i could then slowly added tank water to the bags as you would with new fish, the mature hob filter was put in at the same time.
Good luck and enjoy your new tank :good:

edit to add with tank 260 i already had a mature external with i still run along side the in built 260, also the mature hob is still running along side the juwel 124 and i will most likely keep it in until xmas or just keep it in.

Update:

All is well,

I added all 60l of my water into my new tank and another 60l(ish) of dechlorinated water. (Enough so the filter was running)

Then I topped up over the next 7 days.

I'm running my old Filter along with the new one, and will probably leave it there for a few months at least.

No fatalities I'm happy to report, and I've just added 4 Freshwater Shrimp to my little community.

Will need to get some pics uploaded later when I'm home from work. :)

Thanks again for all the help.

Stu

awsome :good: glad all is well,
If your putting up the stock level a little at a time to enable the new filter to catch up,
also keep testing water if you have a testing kit.
Looking forward to seeing the pics

Good luck.Hope it is all going well...

I am thinking of upgrading...120 litre to maybe a 300/400litre so i dont have to upgrade twice...that is if i can find a cheapish one and weedle around my partner who says we dont have the room in a three bedroom house with just the two of us
