hi guys

im just starting out with gold fish in a 60L tank.

ive installed an external filter (Tetratec EX600) and all is ok, i have 2 red cap gold fish for the time being.

do i have to keep the spray bar so it just skims the top of the water? or can it completely submerged?

also should i keep the filter on full or should i turn it down?

reason i ask, is when i feed the fish, a few of the flakes get sucked up into the filter!

im not sure what setting to keep the filter at as i do not want the tank to get dirt quickly if i turn it down.

any pointers?

thanks!

You want a pointer? I wouldnt keep goldfish in a 60L. I wouldnt keep goldfish in a tank smaller than 4ft, and even that is argueably small for a goldfish.

Goldfish have the potential to grow to over 10" and livc for years. Biggest known is about 19" i believe. They recommend that a common goldfish be kept in no less than a 76L tank for one specimen. I don't even think thats adequate seeing the size they get to. I'd revise your stocking.

If this is meaningless because you want fancy goldfish i refuse to comment on the basis i think its morally wrong to mutate fish to fancy varietys.

General advice regarding your questions though.

1. The spray bar being submerged is absolutely fine, i have mine submerged.
2. Goldfish produce ALOT of poop, keep your filtration on max. Excess food going in the filter is the best place for it to be honest, doesnt fowl your water this way. If your flakes are sinking before they are eaten either you are feeding too much at once before they can eat it, or your surface agitation is making the flakes sink before your goldfish have chance to gobble it.

Remeber, you can't over filter. Providing you havnt got a whirlpool going on in your tank its fine :)

many thanks mate for the info

i told the person who sold me the fish in the shop (pets at home) i had a 60l tank and she sold me 2 little red cap gold fish.

regarding the spray bar, cool, il get it submerged then

my only concern was that the spray bar was pushing water out too fast causing the fish not to swim around properly, although i could be wrong!

Thanks

Do you mean Pets@Home? If yes, hit the sales person on the head really hard with whatever is handy next time. Most, not all, but most staff in there havnt the faintest clue on fish care. I've sneered to myself a few times hearing advice from employees to completely oblivious customers. Try and avoid them if possible, best to go to an actuall LFS.

The spray bar might seem powerfull, i remember when i turned mine on for the first time haha. I had mine facing a little too high, and it was above the water surface. I managed to soak the wall behind the tank it shot that far :p

EDIT: you've since edited it to say Pets@Home :p Oh and i should probably mention (or state) not to follow the advice of beating them on the head :p I don't want to be marked down on that matter
