Probably a stupid question due to the tank being so small but I have a 30x30x67ish cm 60L tank, it currently has 12 barbs living in it and has had for almost a year now, a friend has expressed interest in taking the barbs off my hands. Now I love the wee buggers but has got me thinking about cichlids. Always wanted a tank of them, so the question is really, what if any could I get? I don't mind if it's a species specific or a mix, I am assuming I'm not going to get many in the tank.

Any helps appreciated :)

A pair of rams, or a trio of apistogrammas, would be ok. You could also add six or so small tetras to act as dither fish.

As thereverendturtle said, apistos would work well, as would species like nannacara, and I think you'd be able to get away with a pair of Laetacara curviceps providing they'd be the only cichlids in the tank :)

Height and depth are 30 and length is 67. Cheers for the replies guys. was maybe thinking double reds?

So I've been and after a lot of mind changing I went for a trio of Laetacara dorsigeras or redbreast acaras. They're just settling in now. Nice looking fish. Not sure if I want a small shoal of tetras in there too..

Hi,
I've once kept 4 small Krib's in a tank similar in size to this, until they grow and started breading... then I had dozens!! But they must have been the first egg layers I bread and I was over the moon! They are quite peaceful for a dwarf Chiclid, colourful and easy to sex. Great fun.

As stated add a few neons for a colour foil.

As soon as you have a pair remove the third. It is most likely to get beat up by the pair. They are also very shy a small shoal of tetras, neons, glow lights, phantoms, embers, will help bring them out and make them feel secure.

that's the plan, I'm hoping that there not all the same sex, the guy was struggling to sex them in the shop becasue they hadn't coloured up completely so fingers crossed, I have noticed them hiding a lot, under the filter or under the wood / plants so you reckon 5/6 tetras will make them more relaxed? That might be the solution, I'll give it a few weeks to see if they just need time

Dither fish are very important to the security of most dwarfs, but time often will give them the courage they need.

Will do, I'll get the camera out tonight. The (I assume) male has started floating about above the wood, I'll try get some pics.
