I have a very strong five foot base that was made by my father out of marine grade ply wood but would like a larger tank. Would it be safe to have a tank that over hangs the base?

If its an all glass tank then, NO!

Thats what i thought.
Looks like i will have to stick with a five footer or buy a new base as well

Would there be a way of extending the top of the unit to suport the tank
Ie by adding a 6ft x inch thick piece of ply or will this just bend ending in the same result?

you could always put another piece of playwood ontop of the base..so it hangs over half a foot each side..? maybe that might work?

EDIT: Posted at same time as you did..:p

If the overhang is just at the ends then adding a sheet of ply the same length as the tank and braceing it with 45 degree struts will suffice.
If the tank overhangs width ways as well it would be easier to build a bigger stand.

Saying all that though, if the tank is not hugely out of proportion to the stand you should get away with just a bigger base for the tank to sit on.

HTH

After all that My neighbour popped round lastnight he is splitting up with his wife and has an unused 6ft tank complete with base hood and filters and wants to give it to me.
Its a funny old world.
Needles to say what my answer was

You say you have a 6 ft tank and a 5 ft base that would leave 1/2 a ft on each side if you gat another piece of plywood that was the same width of the stand and same length of the tank it would be fine with no braces only you would have to get 1/2 inch or more thick ply then you could just paint the timber the same colour as the stand and you would not see the diffrence
