Hello, I just got my new 55Liter and was wondering if anyone can help me select some colourful fish for my tank. I was looking at cichlids. But if there are any fish that are colourful and are good for beginners please tell me. Also can you tell me what levels these fish belong to.

If you're speaking of African cichlids, this tank is way too small for them. They need a 55 GALLON tank as a minimum. They are also not suitable for beginners.

Do you know of any colourful fish that would look good in a 55L tank?

Before considering fish you need 2 things
1 A cycled tank
2 Know your water parameters, What is the PH of your tap water? Is you water soft or hard?

Im pretty sure its 7.5 is that good for keeping fish. If so can you tell me about colourful fish I can keep.

Hardness is more important than pH. Your water provider's website should have the hardness on it somewhere. There are lots of different units for hardness so when you do find it give us the unit as well as the number.
If their website doesn't give your hardness, take a sample of your tap water to a fish shop and ask them to test it for GH (general hardness, the one you need) and KH (carbonate hardness, which is useful to know).

You have a few weeks before you can get fish so there is plenty time to decide on which fish to get. You will need to cycle the tank first, and there is an excellent method to follow on this forum here http://www.fishforums.net/threads/cycling-your-new-fresh-water-tank-read-this-first.421488/

How would I find out how hard my water is and what is it out of?

pH alone is not much help. High pH often goes with hard water but not always - I have a pH of 7.5 and 'moderately soft' water.
Is your pH that of freshly run tap water or the tank water? If it is freshly run tap water you need to test a sample of water that had been allowed to stand for 24 hours. The two will probably be different.

Look at the website of your water company, the address should be on your water bill if you live in the UK. On their website, do a search for 'hardness'.
If you are in the UK and you can't find it, tell us the name of your water company and I'll see if I can find the page.

Is that what you meant? If you need any more information tell me.
