I've had no experience with any of them I am afraid - have to have a good look yourself and be careful as I know some species of tetra can fin nip. The Pencilfish always look amazing to me but I can see the Emporer Tetra being good too.

I started off SA biotope planning, but stopped after I realised I liked crypts too much. I kept my cardinals with angels and currently with my discus, and nobody has ever bothered with them. My apistos would chase them when spawning if they got too close, but that was it. If you can find them, and afford them, some coral red pencilfish would be really cool?

How hard is your water? Relatively few SA species do well in hard water.

That is pH, not water hardness, you can get hard acidic water and soft alkaline water. ;)

If using water straight from your taps without any sort of filter, is there limescale in your kettle? Liquid test kits will give you a "gH" and "kH" figure for actual levels.
