If I had a 500 gallon predator tank I would go with a native swamp theme:

A bowfin, some pumpkinseeds, some yellow bullheads and a gazillion minnows of some sort. Lots of driftwood and planted heavily with native plants. Bowfin are the king of our swamps here. Truly prehistoric and downright mean. A mouth full of teeth and ridiculously strong bite (yes, they will bite and it's no joke when they do).

You could go 3 or 4 oscars depending on your parameters.

I’ve caught one that weighted 5lb and was 2ft long.... crazy....

those fish look amazing in a planted black water tank it would look incredible

If you go for the bigger end it will be more satisfying just remember to go for the biggest foot print possible. Don't go for any of the silly monsters like Red Tailed Catfish or Tiger Shovel Noses they get way too big.

How about things like Lima Shovel Noses, Synodontis Decorus, Flagtail Prochilodous, Pink Tailed Chalceus? For predatory fish Boulangier Gars are nice for the top and you could look at things like Birchirs and larger american cichlids in there. Pearsei and Bocourti are big beautiful cichlids that few can accommodate properly but other than their size are not overly aggressive. Pike Cichlids would be cool Zebrina Pikes are an awesome fish and from what I've seen possible in a community of sorts. A big herd of Geophagus or Satanoperca always looks impressive too.

I just got to thinking. What about grass pickerel or maybe even a chain pickerel? Not quite my cup of tea, but they would definitely be an excellent centerpiece fish.
