Well my fish had fry today and i made a new tank for the fry which is a 5 gallon. i needed a filter and this is what i did. I took the empty food container and the tube connected to the pump and stuck the tube into the jood container. then i put cycled sponge around that and some rocks on top of the sponge to keep it in the tank. Weill this work as my filtration unit?

Thanks!

Should work great, I've taken sponge filters & just piled some mature gravel on top.

I make mine a little different, been making them this way for years;

Here's one with the sponge slid up, & a Pepsi can for size reference;

I put a little gravel down the pvc tube for weight, in a pinch toss a handfull of gravel on the top.

2 platy fry in a 5 gallon don't produce much waste at all, I'm sure they will be fine. I use a homemade sponge filter in a 10 gallon with 200-300 angel fry for the first 2 to 3 weeks. Just one does the job, sponge filters are great for bio filtration.

yeah thanks. i was thinking of putting a net around it to keep the gravel in and so the bubbles come up nice and even. hmmmm. heres what the filter looks like
