I've managed to get my LFS to order a crowntail for me!!! YAY!!!!!

And I'm going to have a choice of 12!!!!! (Not buying 12 - well, that's my intention!!!!)

As I'm looking to breed bettas at some stage I'd like to get a male that is going to give great fry - obviously I don't know the breeding history of them but are there any colours whether pure or mixed that are more sort after than others?

PLEASE DON'T TEMPT ME!!!! I was bidding on some betta barraks on ebay but the guy wouldn't deliver to UK - a bit of a blessing I feel!!!!!!

My little boy will have a tank all to himself at first, then I'll put a few neons and guppies in with him!

Hopefully post some pictures next week.

I would avoid the Neons and the Guppies, really. The Neons will nip his fins, and the Guppies will get nipped at (the Betta may mistaken them for another Betta due to the large fins and the bright colors).

Give him some Coryadoras Catfish, some White Cloud Mountain Minnows, or some African Dwarf Frogs. Those should make fine tankmates for a Betta, and be attractive and entertaining at the same time.

I don't really know what would be a more sought after color than any other. One of the reasons, though, that there are more red and blue (and combinations of red and blue) Bettas is because they sell really well. People like them, and many don't even know that any other color exists. That's just the general public, though. Beyond that, true hobbyists all have their own color preferences, so not many colors are highly popular over any other...at least, not to the point where you could get a male and ensure that all his fry would have a more popular color.

Ok, right, what about neons and guppys with a female betta?

I have got a tank setup for my little boy anyway but thought it would be nice to see him in my big tank and put my little CT female (when I get her) in either my 14gal or 22gal.

Anything else along the lines of neon / guppy size that could be put with a male betta?

I wouldn't suggest WCMM in a 2 gallon, they are shoaling fish and like to be in shoals of about 6, and they are like danios, they need lots of room (some people say no less then 20 gallons). The cories are also shoaling fish, and should be in groups, so I don't think they would fit. Most of them get to 2"+ too, so that would be a tight squeeze. You could try an ADF or two, but the betta might be to aggressive and attack them.
I think you should just leave him by himself, if you were to get a 5 or 10 gallon for him, you could add more fish, but I think a 2 gallon would be just fine with him and maybe a few ghost shrimp (he might eat them though!). Thats just my opinion.

Edit: LoL...I'm getting confused. Are you putting him into the 2 gallon? Or are you thinking of putting him in either the 14 or 22 gallon, and then putting a female in which ever one you don't put him in?

Sorry - I'll clarify:-

As per my signature I have 3 tanks, one has room for a few more fish (thinking about the CT Female in that one - the male would be at risk by the BGK I think).

Another is my 14gal which I was thinking of putting neons, guppies and rummynose tetras along with a few cories. This is the tank I wanted to put the CT male in but as has already been answered, tetras and guppies would probably attack / be attacked the CT male and cories would be fine if he were to go in the 14gal.

I don't like minnows (sorry) so I'm still stuck as to what else to put with my CT male in the 14gal(uk) or is he going to be better off in his little 2gal on his own?

Any further thoughts (to this confusing puzzle) would be welcome!

Personally, I would leave the CT boy in a 2G by himself. I am not sure about the girl though. I keep mine together in a tank with no other tank mates, so I don't know how they would react to other species.
