45g tank 4(ft)

Hey all

I was just wondering whether for a 45g tank, 4ft long is able to accomadate more fish (territorily wise as I have a filter that is suitable for a 500L aquarium so theres no problem in that ).

I have....

2 angels
3 apistiogramma (cockatoo) (1 male; 2 females)
6 red eyed tetras
6 neons
5 black neons
5 red tailed tetras
3 bristlenoses

Howdy,

The rule I was always told is 1 inch of fish per gallon. Remember to use there adult sizes when figuring it out cause they will always grow!

I think that you could add a few small non-territorial fish to your tank but they would have to be chosen carefully. What types were you considering?

Some suggestions: more of the tetras you already have, corys, otos, pencilfish.

I think the tank would be pretty well-stocked with that many fish. I'm not sure on the bnoses though, i think they get a bit aggro among each other.

By the way, just because you have a filter for 500L doesnt mean you have the actual water volume of 500L.

Have you cycled the tank? And also, the 1 inch per gallon is more of a guideline then an absolute rule.

of course the tank is cycled ...I'm just saying that the filter is nice and big and shouldn't have a problem with the excess fish waste...


I was thinking of adding a few cories to the tank....btw the bnoses are 1male :2 female so there shouldn't be toooo much quaralling and with ottos i've actually had a bad case of them being eaten by angels and funnily enough they have never touched the neons...but anyway. Pencilfish sound interesting have never kept them.

May i add...i'm very proud of this tank....as its been up for nearly 7mnths and nothing has died....including two neons that are reaching 2 years of age

I have another 4ft with 5 discus and a few 10g's and 20'gs scatterred around with little babbies and other varieties

I wouldn't add anything in that tank unless you have a good filtration system and you'll put up with more water changes.....If you do you could add maybe a shoal of tetras, or anything small, don't get bigger fish as it will cause havoc especially to your angels(territorial battle)....

Angelfish like taller tanks; a 4ft long 45 gallon probably isn't that tall. I wouldn't put angelfish in a tank less than 20" high. In case you haven't noticed, they get about 3" long and 8" high.

yeah i have....i've heard of that.

But i have yet faced any visual problems....my angels all grow to their height and do not appear to stunt....but yeah

I'll probably just leave the tank..... I reckon its stocked fine...I just wouldn't mind a few little bottom dwelling cories though...they are cool but can get expensive
