What about filling the tank with groups of schooling nano species.

Am I wasting all the space? Should I add in a larger centre piece (maybe a Betta and some females)

Thats interesting, what is defined as a nano species, that like a small tetra etc ?

I'd say anything and 1.5 inch or under. But Defoe things like ember tetras or galaxy rasbora.

So rule of thumb is what 1cm per litre so if I ignor the sump. Just galaxy rasbora 2cm adult size. That would be like 200. So I reckon 100 fish would be easy do able

I don't think it would be a waste at all, quite the opposite! So many opportunities for different community fish.

I have a 10 g with 10 galaxy raspora. One hundred in a large tank would be amazing. They are wonderful little fish.

I have always had smallish fish, and a 4-foot or 5-foot tank holding a couple hundred is indeed a sight. Some are "nano" but many are probably not technically, but still small. What are your water parameters, especially GH and pH of the source water? And what are the dimensions, length and width.

So tank is 120 x 55 x 60. Plus a sump on top of that.

Water wise I haven't actually checked yet. But it's generally harder water up here. So I may need to adjust it for most fish.

Ignore the words, look at the numbers. Water company words commonly make it sound harder than it really is.

25.9 mg/l calcium. That unit isn't used in fishkeeping but it can be converted into the two units which we do use. Fish profiles will give hardness in either dH or ppm.

That's soft, not quite very soft but almost.

OK, that all tells us a lot to go by. You are looking into soft and very soft water species, which covers most of the fish from South America and SE Asia. And the tank length of 120cm/4 feet is good.
