Is there no one on this entire site that has any experience with breeding fish?...pathetic!

Breeding saltwater fish at this time is not considered nearly as common or a thing as breeding freshwater guppies or cichlids. As of 2009, less than 90 species of saltwater fish could be bred in captivity, with most, such as clownfish and dottybacks sharing similar procedures. Breeding them and raising them to adulthood requires hours of patience, a lot of equipment, and that isn't available to many people. This site's saltwater hobbyist population is already slim, and of the dismal percent of people breeding saltwater fish, you can't expect anybody here to have bred them. If you don't care that it is saltwater fish that you are breeding and just want to breed anything, just go over to the tropical sections of the site, many people there have a lot of experience.

Pathetic is kinda a harsh word to say about this topic, when if you think about how hard it is to breed saltwater fish, and how only a small amount of people do it, because of how complicated is can.be sometimes, I don't have experience with saltwater species but from alot of research It sounds really hard to breed them, and I doubt that there are many people who breed, and raise saltwater fish on here

I have a ton of experience breeding fish, just freshwater, which is much easier to breed and raise.

I've got a pair of yellow-headed jawfish that I may attempt to breed when I'm comfortable enough and have the right equipment and have the TIME. It takes time to raise fry, so right now my focus is in creating a stable, clean environment.

Getting some species to breed isn't particularly hard, it's raising the fry that's a huge challenge in a SW system, especially within a display tank. Many eat only very small phytoplankton or zooplankton and require tanks that are extremely clean but also possessing of an adequate food supply. It's great that you're at the stage where your fish are spawning.

I suggest you look at the website that was given in your other thread. You've already taken the next step by having a breeding tank setup and ready to do. Please do keep us posted. It is an achievement to breed SW fish, especially if you are able to raise the fry.

Salt water fishkeeping has only been available to most hobbyists for about 30 years. In that time, only a few species have been bred in captivity with any regularity and only then by people who have spent ALOT of time studying their chosen species. As more and more people become more and more interested and as our ability to provide the kind of environment, foods and stimulus improves, our ability to breed saltwater species in the home tank becomes more achieveable. The fact that no-one on this site appears able to tell you how to breed your clown fish isn't an indication of the level of interest or experience of the people on this site, its an indication of your own ignorance about marine fish keeping: it is a relatively new arena in fishkeeping and it takes a lot of study, trial, error and heartbreak to work out what a particular species needs to survive, thrive and successfully breed for a home hobbyist. Longer than 30 yrs, thats for sure! Maybe in 100 yrs, people will be breeding and selling clown fish like guppys. But right now, its simply not that common. Perhaps you could become one of the people to contribute to the "clown fish knowledge pool" through observing your own clowns. You might appreciate how indepth and complex the topic is.

Trolls... not worth responding to :p

He actually did have a question on breeding clownfish. We answered his questions and gave him a couple of how tos, but he wanted somebody who had actually bred them, because I guess we look like a bunch of people with the time on their hands to raise SW fry. I don't know anybody here who has, so he posted that little rant you see.

I was told that you need to dose the tank with Iodine, otherwise the Clowns stripes wont form.

Billy at MG Marines in Dudley breeds quite a lot of Clown Fish....as a matter of fact he supplies a lot of pet shops with them.....he is the man for advice on them....

I've also heard that, I always wondered whether misbar clowns whether were the result of genetics or a lack of iodine.

-Nemo- has been breeding clowns pretty consistently, but has not been real active lately. Her inactivity could be due to this. Reminds me of the old saying among discus breeders; once you start breeding discus you never get to go on vacation.

Me, I have!

I have bred with many, many fish. Sometimes I wake up with them but mostly they have just taken advantage of me and left before dawn -- making me feel truly...pathetic (sigh). Bit like the OP really :hey:
