I have a 29US Gallon that should be free prety soon. It currently has two Mudsippers.

I want to do another brackish setup when they are gone.

THIS MAY BE A TERRIBLE IDEA, BUT...

I want to keep

Violet/Dragon Gobyx1

F8 Pufferx 1 or 2

And something else maybe

Other Gobies Perhaps?

I think the puffer would eat Mollies, so none of those.

IS THIS A REALLY BAD IDEA?!? I've heard of some doods who have done GSPs and Dragons

I plan to overfilter a lot.

Any other stocking suggestions?

Thanks for the Help

I wouldn't keep GSPs or Figure-8 puffers with Violet Gobies. The risk of the puffers biting the goby is just too great.

In any case, Violet Gobies need a much bigger aquarium; in US terms, a 55 gallon tank. These are BIG fish when mature, the biggest gobies in the world, in fact, and they need lots of space.

Cheers, Neale

Do you mean 55USG per Violet? If I were to do that, what else could I put in there?

If I were to do do a 30USG without the Violet, what should I put in?

F8s and little Gobies?

Most anything, even guppies! Because Violet gobies aren't predatory, they're a good choice for livebearers or halfbeaks. Mollies and guppies are obvious choices, but you could be more of a specialist and look for Giant Sailfin Mollies, Endler guppies, Limia nigrofasciata, or Swamp guppies (Micropoecilia picta). They also work well with Knight gobies, Florida flagfish, and other small to medium-sized, non-aggressive fish. I wouldn't keep them with monos or scats simply because feeding the Violet gobies would be difficult, but archerfish might be an option, since they won't take food from the bottom of the tank. Do see my Brackish FAQ for details on keeping/feeding Violet gobies.

Bumblebee gobies do consistently work well with figure-8s. I dare say other small gobies, like Rhinohorn gobies (Redigobius balteatus) and Australian desert gobies (Chlamydogobius eremius) would also work well, given suitable shells, hiding places, etc. These other gobies aren't common, but they're in the trade. I bought some Australian desert gobies a few months ago in an all-yellow "gold" morph that is commercially bred.

I've got a 55 Gallon stocked happily with the following:

5x Figure 8 Puffers
10x Red/Orange Chromides (awesome fish if you can find them)
1x Unknown Goby (medium sized, about 3", has long fins but the puffers leave them alone)
2x Bumblebee Gobies (are supposed to be in the sump with 12 of their bretheren, but I can't catch them and they seem to be doing just fine)
2x Sailfin Mollies (still juveniles, the female is 1" and the male is about 1 1/4")

Everybody gets along really well. My one recommendation is lots of hiding spots and plants to break up lines of sight. I use fake plants because the puffers ate every other plant I put in there, and clay pots for hiding spots.
