2nd Hand Tank - Rena 60

hi,

in a bizarre twist of fate on Saturday, as I was dumping our weekly rubbish at the tip, there was a gent getting rid of a RENA 60 with pump [funny shaped version]. Assures me it all is fine, but he is moving house [downsizing] and so only has room for his 1 big tank.

as i am still cycling my other tank, i'll wait until that finishes and use media to kick start this one.

My queries are:

1. filter/heater - i know it has the eheim ball thing, is that an ok filter? if i just got media for that, would that be ok? What heater would go with this? or is an external one going to be better? as it is only 55L i'd rather not spend a fortune on it as it will be more af a holding/nursery/hospital tank when everything finally gets sorted.

2. what is the best way to ensure there are no bugs lurking around in the bottom of the tank and to clean it all up?

I know that whatever filter i get, i can stick it in the bottom of the filter in tank that is currently cycling, to get a headstart, but i want to make sure that i clean out this tank, and make it nice while the bacteria grow

yeah the eheim aquaballs are supposed to be decent as internal filters go, generally speaking eheims are about the best filters money can buy. Obviously you'd need to check the condition which is nothing we can comment on.

to clean it out get cheap thin bleach with no fragrances etc in (it's usually the asda smartprice or equivalent) mix that up 20 parts water to 1 part bleech, soak and scrub everything with new pot scrubbers and toothbrushes, then rinse very very thoroughly, rinse them some more, then you're good to go.

the external heaters work with external filters, just get a standard in tank glass tube one, they're usually only about £10 so not a fortune.
