Hiya - I'm told that the built in Juwel filter won't be sufficient for a couple of oscars, so I want to pre-empt the need to buy a second filter.

I know there are tonnes of different types (e.g. sponge, internal, clip on, canister etc)...I guess the canister might be best for the Juwel as you have the cabinets beneath. Open to persuasion on this though!

Any clue what brand / type / spend is necessary?

Thanks! :)

Yes a cainster will be your best option here.

All types to look at really so it just comes down to what you want to pay.

At the lower end of the price range you have the All pond solutions cainsters. Cheaper but still do a good job.

Then you have a bit more up market filters like Ehiem,Fluval,Aqueal and Oase etc

Oase are good and come with integrated heaters but are pretty pricey.

Fluval imo are probably the best all round cainsters for your money and produce the no1 cainsters on the market for me with the fx series.

Knowing your going for Oscars id go with a fluval fx6

Thanks all. I've taken a look at the Fluval site.

FX4 appears to be for 1,000L tanks, whereas FX6 is aimed at 1,500L.

With this in mind, would you still go for the FX6? If so, is there a reason for this?

Ta! :)

Yes without a doubt.

I wouldnt take too much notice of what fluval or any other company rate on what tanks they can filter upto. All manufacturers seem to pull those numbers out the air. You would need 2 fx6's for a 1000ltr tank and 3 for 1500ltrs but id have a sump for anything over 1000 myself.

An fx6 will properly filter a 500ltr tank whats perfect for a Rio 450 especially with messy fish like oscars.

I run a Aqueal Ultramax 2000 (same size cainster as a fx6) and a fluval 4 series on my Rio 450.

Pond guru on youtube might be worth you having a ganda at. Narrow your choices down then watch his videos on them.

You wont beat a fx6 for me tho. If you go for one just double check the dimensions of your cabinet because its a big filter. Pretty sure it fits tho when i checked a while back🙂

This place is great...thanks for all the help! :)

I've heard many times that the Juwel filter isn't all that great, so i guess I'll keep it running in the background and supplement it with the FX6.

In the event that I want to switch my tank up to an internal Fluval filter as well (such as the U4), will this fit in the Juwel housing?

The Juwel bioflows arent all bad tbh, ive got one in my 180 and it does its job well. I took it out my 450 because i wanted more space in the tank.

Pretty pointless you swapping it for a u4 really, it will do the job no better than the bioflow.

I think you will be fine with the bioflow and the fx6

I've got a Rio 450 and recently purchased two FX6. The problem is the cut-outs for the in&out takes aren't big enough to accommodate 4 fixtures / hoses. Anyone got any tips on how to get around this to ensure the lip sits plush on top? I've considered cutting the lid top so it closes properly but thought I'd see if anyone has faced this cosmetic issue before doing so?
Many thanks

Following the above comments. I have both a fluval 207 and a allpondsollutions 1000EF. They both are great filters but I find the build quality of the fluval is considerably better and is probably going to last longer
