Hi Guys,

I have just been getting a few quotes for rimless and braceless tanks.

I got a quotes of £200 ect but then my LFS said he can do one in 10mm glass for £60. Do you think it will be better than using my jewel, which has a nasty black seal!!

Chris

10mm seems over the top for a tank that size IMO.

Yes, 10mm is really more than required, but why would that be a disadvantage? Clarity would not really be affected, it would only be a little more heavier. I say its a good deal. :)

Thanks,
Chris

I'd be more worried about the nasty horible silicone tide mark you get on cheap tanks, compared with the the clean line of the black silicone on the juwel.

what do you mean by rimless braceless? I have been looking to upgrade my tank to this size and i just checked price today, the tank would be £20 and the hood 9.99, the silcone is clear, i have no idea what you mean by rimless though, everything has a rim doesnt it?

The issue is with this, and I have spoken to Craynerd privately about the matter so I hope he won't mind me airing my views here.

Firstly I've been in the same situation myself as I wanted to get a 90x45x45 rimless, braceless tank made. No tank maker I found would guarantee a tank they made without a brace, so my guess is this guy has said 10mm to ensure the glass does not break. I presume bowing would be an issue on a tank with no bracing, but based on my research I think it's something you can't avoid. I bought a 60x30x35 tank for £25 and removed the glass cover holders on each front and back side of the tank, carefully with a razor and pliers to break the glass lips. After a few hours I had a perfect ADA style rimless braceless tank, and also heavily bleeding fingertips!

Anyway this glass is 4mm thick with a bottom pane thickness of 6mm, the glass does bow quite a bit but does not break when filled. Now witness the recent tour of the ADG showroom in houston on the APC forum, they show you an ADA tank there in detail including the silicone work and construction, this tank also bows slightly. So I think it is something you have to live with.

The issue with the juwel tanks is the black silicone I think looks ugly and I dont like the black trim round the bottom either. Getting a tank made such as this is always a risk as you dont know what kind of a job the guy is going to do with the silicone, the cheap tank I bought when filled with water actually shows air bubbles along the siliconed seams, my thoughts are in time this would lead to the tank bursting.

However what I would do in the situation (and will be doing soon) is ordering one of the braceless rimless tanks from Aquaessentials, these are the same tanks ADA use made by the same people, I think all ADA do is stick a white sticker on the bottom right hand corner of the tank, construction and quality I believe is the same, and the glass thickness quoted on the site matches that of the ADA catalog. For £119 you are going to get a 60cm much better than anything else IMO, I would not bother buying any other UK made tanks and would opt instead for these german ones Aquaessentials has as the price is good and I am pretty sure the quality will be excellent.

a juwel tank has some bracing going on, but the rio range have a plastic brace in the middle, sometimes two for the larger tanks....

You notice round the bottom of the juwel tanks there is a plastic trim, this is to hide the thicker bottom glass and also some quite heavy silicone work round the base. This is quite unlike an ADA tank where everything is aimed to be as transparent as possible. I am fast becoming convinced the most important component is the tank itself. But more so the fact that the less visible and noticeable the tank is the more effective.

Welcome to the world of rimless braceless.

you should have no problem getting a 24 x 12 x 15 that is braceless and rimless, i see them all the time and for a lot cheaper than £60. Where do u live? £200 seems well excessive. I cen get one accross the road from my house for less than £30

:S :S :S

I`m not calling you a lier, but i suspect that there is a brace or rim on them, since the £60 10mm glass tanks have been my cheapest quote and i have rang about 10 tank makers !!

oldwhitewood, thankyou once a gain for the input, you are correct and i will not be buying the tank. I will use the jewel for now, put the money into the tank elsewere and upgrade the tank next scape. I know i could sell the tank complete, but that would mean dismanteling it and then buying the new one. I definately need an overlap, so i can keep my plants in good condition whilest i setup the aquascape. I know the ADG guys setup a tank in 30minutes lol, i can imagine it takin me a little longer :)

EDIT: Just had a bath and a think :?

My whole point of setting this tank up was to take my time and not rush. By not waiting and getting exactly what i want am i not rushing?? Its not like i don`t have a tank currently to tinker with. Maybe i should wait and get a quality tank?? Like you said oldwhite, i certainly do value its importance.

Chris

Well we will see today wont we because i am going to buy the tank i was talking about, maybe i can post a picture to prove me right.

Lifes too short to wait, just do it do it!

I certainly look forward to your post! Maybe you can post a picture to prove you right, good luck in posting that picture! Lol
And we are talking about a 24 x 12 xs 15 inch . I have a 24 x 8 x 8 here and the biggest i have seen was 24 x 12 x12 rimless and braceless. Apparently after 24 x 12 x 12 it is against regulations to build it with standard materials without a brace! (I have just rang my LFS)
So a warning, if it is true and there is one there, make sure they provide you with a guarantee!!

Hehe, decision made: Selling my Rekord70 fully setup. I actually don`t need it at all. I have new lighting fixture, new filter. The only thing I`m missing in a completely new setup is the tank!

Do AE bill you with extra postage on the tanks or does it still come under free postage over £50 ..anyone ordered, or richard you about?

Chris

As far as I'm aware that is the price with shipping included. It's a good deal! And plus if you get one we can see what it's like :hey:

That does not suprise me in the slightest craynerd, seeing that the UK aquarium business is so far behind the times in terms of tank construction. Normally on smaller tanks you have a thin strip of glass siliconed to the front and back. This as well as providing a support for a lid is also a good size to fit a cover glass. Again two things which I would not want to use on my tank as I think both are outdated concepts. There is nothing better than having an open topped tank, the extra dimension of being able to view the tank through the surface is brilliant, and it makes things so easy to work on. I would never go back to having a tank with a lid on now, or indeed a tank with bracing! Lets move into the 21st century with this one now guys!

I have a Clearseal 30x12x15 braceless, rimless - it's also guaranteed.

Any order over £50 has free delivery included.

Hope this helps

Well i got the 30 x 12 x 12 rimless and bracless, looks like it could be combination of 6mm and 10 mm glass, it was 23.99 without the hood, hood was 10.99. Yes i know i said i was gettin 24 x 12 x 12 but the didnt have it so i thought i'd go larger (you always want a bigger one than what youve got anyway :hey: )

All i have to do now is find out how to use the digital camera, the software and load the picture up, i will wait till boyfriend gets home, hes better at these things.

P.s yes it has a gaurantee, i have filled the tank and it looks very sturdy, i have noticed the shop are using the same brand in all different sizes and all their tanks look fine, no bowing

Good luck gettin a bargain.
