20G Community Tank

Interesting reading. Thinking along the same lines myself. Switching from a 15 gallon to 28 gallon tank soon . Have 2 Cory's at the minute which isn't good but going to up that to 8 or 9 hopefully. There lovely little guys

Would shrimp and snails be fine with the tetras and corydoras?
Depends on the tetra, the more fiesty tetra may go after shrimp (snails are fine). Corys are fine with shrimp and snails

I wouldn't say cories are fine with shrimp. It depends upon the species of shrimp (meaning, size especially). Most fish, and cories certainly, include crustaceans in their diet. Crustaceans occur in most tropical watercourses, and those on the substrate will eagerly be snapped up by cories. This is why cories are so fond of prepared foods like shrimp pellets, frozen shrimp, and even live brine shrimp will send them into a feeding frenzy.

If the shrimp is small enough to be grabbed by the fish--cory or any upper level fish--it will inevitably become food.

Snails are very different; few fish (puffers, some loaches) will eat snails as the snail is too hard to get at in its shell. Larger snails may have their antenna nipped though.

ok so looking to get keep the 20 gallon tank to 6 neon tetras, 6 peppered cory, 1 or 2 snails, and 6 or so cherry shrimp if i can get enough hiding and plants for them, if not, ill do the aforementioned fish with and 2 or 3 smaller gourami, maybe a sprakling grourami. does that sound fine? i did check the place near me and they dont have any bolivian rams or other gouramis, if i go with tetras and corys, are there any other good tank mates that could fit in the 20g?

First, with shoaling fish it is always better to have more, subject to the tank space and the species requirements. Before adding other fish like gourami, if you have neons, have more of them so they will be healthier. Same for cories. In a 20g basic (high) tank (length 60cm/24 inches) I would suggest 8-9 neons and same for cories, minimum. If it is a 20g long (length 30 inches/75 cm) a few more would be good, say 12 each. This provides both neons and cories with better conditions. Numbers when it comes to a shoaling species really are very important.

As for gourami, the pygmy sparkling is always better with a small group, I would not get just one, or two. In a 20g high three or four, in a 20g long.

If this is a 20g long, in addition to the above you could also have a group of small-sized rasboras. In a 20g high I would probably leave it as above.

It is a 20g high (24inch), so I could get like 8 neons, and cories, as well as the 3 pygmy gourami? Or just the cories and neons?

All three are OK. They occupy different levels and none are substantial on the bioload. Floating plants are recommended for all three.

but no shrimps with gourami right?

So I have the neon tetras in there right now. 9 of them. And have 9 panda corys and 3 sparkling gouramis coming in. Just wanted to make sure that the stocking is okay. It is 20 gallon high with a filter meant for 30 gallons and plants including floating plants. All cycled.

No problems with fish stocking.
