So...this is only if my gourami settles into the 55 gallon without killing or stressing the tetras and others.

I don't have many options as it's a bit harder water (for example, my ph is 8.2). I know I like soft water fish and I'm trying to stay with the more adaptable type. Right now I've only got petsmart to choose from, I haven't yet been to the petstore that's 55 mins away.

I was thinking black neons with maybe 2 or 3 guppies thrown in for color, but I'm not sure. I sort of want some khuli loaches as well, I do have sand substrate.

Can 6 khuli loaches go in a 20 gallon high with maybe 10 to 15 black neons? Would the khulis disrupt the plants at all?

Also a note- I have an amazing growth of floating salvinia minima in the tank. I take out handfuls weekly doing my 50-60% water changes. So water quality should be good.

I know I could do male guppies...I just don't really want guppies that much. I wouldn't trust getting male platies as petsmart as they are in a mixed gender tank. I wouldn't want an accidental female. Lol.

Now, if I ever get to go to this other petstore they may have other things I like. Lol. But anyway, what do you think?

Get rainbowfish eggs from breeders around the US, and hatch and grow up the fish. They love hard water and there are several people that send rainbowfish eggs around the country. Gary Lange is one of the more notable people but there are plenty of others that send eggs.

Perhaps see if there is an aquarium society or cichlid society in your area and go to a few of their meetings. You might be able to find some fish or pet shop that has interesting fish to keep. :)

No aquarium societies around here or anything that aren't hours away unfortunately. It sucks. That one pet shop may surprise me if I can ever get out to it. Stupid car problems....anyway.....

As for the rainbow fish...are there any besides the thread fins and the gertrudae (sp?) Type that would fit in a 20 gallon? I just don't like the long fins of the thread fin or the lifespan of the others. Lol. Other than those I thought they would all be too big. But I may be interested if I found something I liked.

How big is the 20 gallon tank, length x width x height?

There is info on different rainbowfish species at the following link. Some small species of rainbowfish that might fit include: Melanotaenia maccullochi, sexlineata, papuae, nigrans, exquisita, Glossolepis maculosis or ramuensis, and all the Pseudomugil species.

The is a place online that sells fish and eggs in the US. I think its wetspot but can't find the website nowadays. But lots of the American rainbowfish forum members use to get fish or eggs from there.

You could also try ANGFA in America. ANGFA (Australia & New Guinea Fishes Association) originated in Australia but there are branches in the US and Europe, and their members are usually able to send you eggs.

Otherwise the American Rainbowfish Society, or try to track down Gary Lange but don't mention my name. I know they were on Facebook so if you can't find them online, perhaps check Facebook for societies.

It is 24" long by 12" wide by 16.5" tall.

I'll go check stuff out on the rainbow fish. Thanks for the info!
