Hello. I have 3 black skirt tetra and 1 sunburst platy in this tank so far. Planning to get 3-4 more fishes. Any suggestions as to what I should get? Also, could I add more than 3-4?

One of my black skirt tetras likes to hide behind a clam shell that I have set up in the tank, I don't know if this is normal as the other 2 like to school with each other. Later, the shell hider comes out and schools with them. Is it okay for this tetra to behave this way?

Thanks again! I'm new =)

You should get more of the same, creating shoals, both Platy and Black Skirt Tetra are shoaling fish so should have a min of 5-6 of each.

Platies aren't shoaling fish. The males just chase the females all day.

update: i have added 3 black neon tetras.

my tank is now 3 bn tetras and 3 bls tetras and 1 platy.

Could I add possibly 1 more fish? Thank you.

First of all how big is your tank?

say's 10g is the topic title.

to work out your stocking you need to find the adult sizes of all your fish in inches, add it up and it should be the same as the number of gallons your tank holds. there are some exceptions but it'll work for calcuating your tanks options out.

the black skirt tetra's get to 2"
the black neons 1"
and the platy 2"

so you have 11" of fish in a 10g tank. so your full up, tiny bit too many fish but it'll be OK as long as you keep on top of tank maintenance

however you need to take into consideration other factors relating to the specific fish you have. the tetra's need to be kept in a group of 6 of each type. but to get 6 of each would be far too many fish for your tank. here's a few options you can look into, you'd have to take some of your fish back to the store and exchange them

6 black skirt tetras
1 platy

or

6 neon tetras
1 platy
1 other small (2" or less) fish

or

6 neon tetras
1 platy
4 pygmy cories/4 ottos

basically you need to choose between the black skirts and black neons, as the skirts get bigger if you pick them you've not got room for anything else, with the neons you've a little space to play with.

:)

Has the tank completely cycled yet? If not I wouldn't add anymore fish for now. Two weeks and you have that many fish already indicates your tank biological filter hasn't caught up to the bioload yet. Also what kind of filter do you have?
