ive got 2 tanks empty at home, a glass tank measuring 10 x 8 x 8 (an old tarantula tank) and a plastic tank 15 x 10 x 8. I want to keep a siamese fighter on its own, but would the glass tank be big enuff? its not even on the volume calculator, ut if they can keep them in cups in a shop, surely it would be ok in the smaller glass tank, must be about 1.5 gallons. The plastic tank has a horrible olive/spring green coloured lid, so dont really want to use that, ive only used that when i kept my fish in there when i was cleaning my bigger tank.
Any way back to the fighter, basically can i just add gravel and the fish or do i have to buy an airpump? Im prepared to do water changes twice a week. The room is pretty warm anyway. Thanks guys

betta need a temp of about 25 minimum.1.5g should be ok but maybe make it 3 water changes a week. Why don't you add marbles ot the bottom it would be easier to clean and you don't need an airpump.

either would be perfect them 10 x 8 x 8 is 3 US gal while the 15 x 10 x 8 is 5 US gal <-- what i got on vol calculator, what unit are the measurements in?

the measurements are in inches. Hmmm never heard of marbles instead of gravel, do u mean normal marbles, the ones we used to play with at school, many years ago?

Whats ambient room temperasture? must be about 25

25 degrees. No theres these marbles which thy look like discs.I can get a little tub of them for a quid.

then my above post is correct, 3 and 5 gal

i will be going betta shopping in the morning, hopefully a nice blue one. I saw a white fighter with red fins, is this a rare one?

Also do i need to cycle the tank?

You can cycle it, but with bettas I don't think it's as crucial because so many of us do 100% water changes anyway.

Marbles are better than gravel in terms of cleaning, and can be pretty if you get nice ones. You can also get a fake plant, look for something that doesn't have sharp edges though as betta fins are delicate and can tear. You might want to look for something that looks realistic to you, there are some really nice looking ones that are plastic or silk, and sometimes it's hard to tell the difference if it's good quality.

Room temp is usally ok for bettas, as they're quite hardy, and while they will do better in tropical temps, they do fine in room temp water. Just, whatever you do, don't forget to keep the windows closed in the winter... we lost a betta that way when we went away for the weekend and my husband forgot to close the window all the way....

hi thanks alot for that information, might not be getting the betta today, won another tank on ebay, people gonna be really pissed off at home lol... so addicted to ebay and tanks. Thanks again everyone

buy a silk plant a a little ornament and that will be enough else he isnt going to have much swimming space. Why not go on kgbettas and theres some nice blue oens on there.

Got a nice red one yesterday, the guy at pets at home wouldnt sell me one as i told him that i never had a heater and that they didnt need it, but he refused to sell me one. So i sent my lil brother in and he got it, and the betta seems to be fine.

What do i feed it, i offered some flake, but its still in the tank. I remember reading on here something about boiled peas....

It usually takes a day or two for the fish to settle in and eat. I had one that it took 2 weeks before he started eating regular. When I get a new betta I do give them a pea, it helps cleanse them. I give them a pea once aweek after that. Thawed in microwave and shelled. After being in a little cup I think it is important to cleanse out their system and keep their water super clean.

so i just add a pea to the tank, once its been defrosted and shelled?
