heay guys! my moms friend and I went to a lfs today and for the first time in my life, i saW kuhli loaches! i of course fell in love with them and she insisted for me to choose 2 of them and she would pay so who could refuse an offer like that ;) but i had just one question... how come the 2 of em like wont like swim around a lot? they just stay under their flower pots the whole time! btw i got one light one and one dark one =)

kuhlis, like most loaches, do best in groups of three or more, they'll be more active and playful. but its also not uncommon to not see your kuhlis too much, they do like to hide.

They are also new to your community :) It is not unusual not to see them at all for a while! The three I have were in this tank about a month or so before I saw all three together, out in the open. Prior to that I only ever saw one at a time, and wondered whether I might have lost any. Now they are out regularly. They are a lovely fish, but you might be more likely to see them after lights out since they have nocturnal tendencies. Enjoy them! :)

BTW, how did you get away with "choosing" your khulis? :D They are so hard to catch!

Kuhli loaches you'll not see much during the day at all ... no matter if you've got 2 or 10, they just like to hide under pots and in substrate ... its best to have sand for them, seeing as on gravel with sharp edges they tend to get small wounds on their stomach, and they're very slow healers.

Times they get more active is when its rainy outside, as well as when its getting a bit darker/at night ... pay some attention to them tonight after the lights are out (probably the lights of the room you're in as well ... or very limited light) ... bet ya they'll be moving around then

wow its either all you people have you facts wrong or mine were weird...

I had 2 and they CONSTANTLY swan around, all over the tank. Cept i used to have alot of fish so maybe they felt comfortable in there. There was not one time i went to look at it when i didnt see them.

I had 2 until yesterday, and I added 4 more. They all came from the same shop, and they had all buried themselves in the gravel and couldn't be found the first time I went in. Yesterday after we saw a tail sticking out under a rock and the lady the owns the shop started digging around with her fingers to move the substrate, 4 of them came shooting out and I told her I'd take them all :)

The two that I used to have in there did fine by themselves. They almost always hid under a piece of PVC pipe I put in as a cheap "cave". The two would often huddle together and you'd only think there was one fish, then two heads would appear and start picking up food off the gravel. The 4 I put in yesterday immediately went for the plants to hide. One has taken up residence under the growing leaves of my cryptocoryne wendtii.... another under my cryptocoryne lutea.... another at the base of my watersprite.... and, I can't explain this one.... one gets about halfway up in my watersprite! I saw him there and thought he was dead or sick, and when I reached in and moved the watersprite, he darted over to the other piece and started resting in it.

Some people don't like kuhlis because they look like snakes, but they have such an adorable little face, and they're funny to watch. I just can't get enough of the little buggers! :D

If you want some Kuhlis that are out and about a lot, even in light, track down some "Black" Kuhlis - very active, less colorful though.

Yesterday after I added those 4, my other two are coming out more. They're venturing out to eat and play with plants while I sit and watch them. In fact, here's one taking a break from searching under a cryptocoryne lutea...
