I bought 2 new corys this weekend and a Pristella to keep my adopted pristella company. I noticed 1 of the cory's was swimming funny. He was missing one of his side fins. I was going to get some melafix the next day to add but the next morning he was dead. Everyone else looked fine. Then this morning the Pristella was missing his dorsal fin which was fine the night before. I figured one of the platy's ripped it off for some reason so I moved him over to the 5.5g but this evening when I got home he was DOA. It seems to quick to be fin rot but I'm not experianced with it so am not sure on progression of the diease.

They were in my 10g with my platy's

EDIT: my sig is wrong they are platys

Platy's are not known for fin nipping, do you have any other fish in you 10gal?
It may be fin rot, but that is usually cause by bad water or fin nipping. Try the melafix.

Fin rot can progress very quickly if water conditions are not ideal. Having said that the i have never seen a case where it was less than 24 hours between detection and the death of the fish. Your parameters indicate that things are fine except ther is the nitrate. Are you using something to remove the nitrates? Have a close look several times a day at each fish in that tank and if any exhibit similar symptoms then isolate if possible and treat with a fin rot med. Melafix is good for healing the fins and is a good general tonic as suggested by Guppylover but is not the best for curing the cause of the fin rot. Also check with the LFS to see if they are also having these problems. They may be able to give you the cure or even give you new fish or credit. HTH :)

The only fish in there are the ones in my sig. I bought 2 paletus cory's and the pristella at the same time. They were not in the same tank at the LFS. The pristella seemed fine even with missing his dorsal he swam a little funny but that was it. Maybe moving him to the other tank killed him... I still don't know what would have ripped his dorsal off though. I looked at his body and didn't see any signs of illness. The LFS will replace him but I hate losing a fish. I might just get a store credit and watch the other fish to make sure everything is ok. The last time I checked my nitrate's which was a few days ago it was at 20ppm. I keep a couple of Amazon Swords in that tank to help with the nitrate's. Oh well thanks for the help I'll see if I can get this straight and hopefully I won't lose anymore fish.

Yeah sorry the nitrAte reading in the first post was wrong.
