2 male 4 female guppies

If I were to buy 2 male and 4 female guppies for a 10 gal tank how many would there be in a few months?
What could I do with the fry if it gets overcrowded?

Well, how many would depend if your fish eat fry a lot. If they don't eat fry, a couple hundred. If they do...you could have as few as 10. Are you planning on taking them out, and putting them in a breeding net, or what? Is your tank planted? Are there lots of hiding places for the fry?

And sometimes your fish store, or Pet Store will take Guppies. Do you know any friends who might want some? Or you could try posting here on the Buy, Sell, And Swap section...

I wasn't going to take the fry out but I would have a lot of hiding places in the tank.
How many would there need to be before they needed to be given away?

How long is a piece of string, guppies are the rabbits of the aquatic world.
a 10g tank just isn't big enough to breed in and there will be a lot of casualties, if you want to breed them successfully you would need an additional fry tank or the adults will eat the fry and although this is a fact of life in fish breeding, you really need to ask yourself is this something you want a class of 5 and 6 year olds to see.
Sorry to sound so critical but in my opinion livebearers are not the things for a classroom tank unless you only keep one sex, or are able to provide the right environment to breed successfully

I agree with Lady_Tanksalot...10 gallons isn't really big enough to breed, unless you plan on growing up the fry somewhere else.

Have you considered just male Guppies, because that can look very nice. Just make sure there are at least 5, to cut down on aggression. Or just females, but then you will get some fry anyway, seeing as they can keep on being pregnant for 7 pregnancies after they see a male.

males definatly, they are a lot more colourful, and why not add some cories for the bottom of the tank the kids in my class love them

umm whats the fish called which lives on the side of the tank they can swim but they lie on there bellys on the sides of the fish tank

I was JUST going to suggest Cories for the bottom, since they are so active and cute.

And philipwaldram, you might want to try getting smaller tailed males, instead of very Fancy Guppies, because that can also keep aggression down somewhat. Not as much tail and fins to nip on.

erm...... well..... i have live plants in there but don't ask me what they are

plants aren't my thing, i buy ones i like the look of and so far they seem to work just fine.

i'm assuming you mean plecs, phils tank is way too small to support a plec

no they won't but danios are fast swimmers and they are schooling, so you need a big tank to support the school.
