Ive loved the look of Kribensis for ages and finally decided to get myself a pair. They have been in 2 days and the female is chasing the male, The female is slightly bigger and looks desperate to mate, she is bright purple and electric yellow. She curls up and shakes by the male but alot of the time he can see her coming and just gets out of there. Within the 2 days his tail has become slightly shredded. The female has a coconut shell she often guards but the male doesnt have one. Is this behaviour normal? will the male give in and mate? or is she just likely to batter him to death?

They can be quite physical! Sounds like you have an immature male and a mature female. Give him a little more time to settle in - plenty of meaty foods and they will soon be producing eggs.

put some more caves in there you say that:

you really need to get more caves. If you haven't already try half buried or over turned ceramic plant pots about
3-5" PVC Pipes, DIY coconut caves. Also put more plants in your tank if it isn't densly planted and the male will feel more secure and most likely mate with the female give them time, meaty & high protein foods & don't forget to check out my pinned topic at the top of the section or just click on the link below

Honestly, the pair most likely won't work out. It is the "golden rule" that you have a smaller female than male with these fish. The female are very agressive, a nd they pick the male. It's the other way around in most fish. I would take the female back and get a smaller one.

sorry havent updated faster, 2 days ago i came home from work and the male had a slight red belly aswell. I went to the lfs and bought 2 more caves for them so i now have 3. They are both together 90% of the time with no fighting and constant shaking at each other. They keep going around the 3 caves, 1 goes in the other stays outside shaking at it. Then it comes out the other goes in and shaked at that one. I guess this means there a happy pair together now and just looking for sumwhere to spawn.

Hmm, that is interesting. I am really surprised, usually when the female starts beating the crap out of the male, it's the end of it.

maybe she was just doing it as they were new in the tank. There still doing the same thing for the past 3-4 days now jsut going round shaking and looking at caves.

can i have more than 2 kribensis in my tank? or once paired they will just fight everything else?

No you can not have more kribs in there. Unless the tank exceeds 40 gallons (I couldn't keep two pairs in a 30g). They would also need a lot of caves. Even then, it's not certain. Besides that, once they start breeding, you won't be able to get them to stop.

i guess i can keep some of the offspring if i get to that stage. Ive ordered a 100g tank due in around 8 weeks time so may see wot happens if they have babies.

Yes brothers and sisters will mate but there wont be any problems unless there is a physical problem with either of the pair that are mating. Dont keep too many pairs unless you want to be over run with fish as they will mate once a month (sometimes even less than this ) and produce 50 or more eggs!
