I've had a magnum 350 for years for my 55 gallon. It seems to do a good job but doesn't seem as powerful as it should, especially since I've added more fish and decor. Would it hurt to add a small powerfilter with a biowheel on the other end of the tank?

I always run 2 filters on all my tanks. I use HOBs and my fav combo is a AquaClear and a Penquin or/ Wisper. That way I always have back up if one shuts down on me and I can stager filter care so I do not disturb all the bio bed at once.

I have two filters on my 55 gallon as well-- an Eheim external canister and an Aqua Clear HOB on opposite ends of the tank.

Ok, I'll add another filter on the other end of the tank. And yes I routinely clean the filter and add new carbon.

Two filters is great - you have redundancy in case something goes wrong with one, you can stagger the cleaning so there's never a worry of killing the bacteria, and, well, you get more filtration.
