Hey i got a empty 20 gal which looks preety depresing with out fish

so is it okay if i get 2 common gold fish for it which are about 2 inches each now and ill move them when i get other fish?

The absolute bare minimum for two common
goldfish is 30 gallons, So the answer is no.

dd, why don't you put a betta in the 20g? :dunno:

A VT would look nice in the tank, and be easy to re-home.

My first coldwater post, and I'm spreading betta propaganda. :p

If its only tempory housing for small fish it will be ok for a couple of months but as said a pond will be needed for the fish as they grow as Comets demand more room due to their higher activity level. :)

Yikes! Glad I came over to coldwater from the tropical section

My son was sold 6 fancy goldfish of different descriptions and a 15 litre plastic tank about 6 months ago. Well you can imagine they got pretty sick very quickly so we went out and bought a 96 litre tank and put two fluval 2 filters in there.

We lost 2 black moors, a shubunkin and a fantail goldfish in 2 weeks as we were complete newbies and didn't find out about cycling etc. We finally got the tank cycled with mega constant water changes and then stupidly went out and replaced the lost fish as we still hadn't found out about stocking levels and of course the lfs said it would be fine as the water was now ok!

So we are now 4 months down the line and the fish are getting bigger and bigger. I was alerted to the fact that the tank is overcrowded from a post on tropicals about someone keeping a Goldfish in a small bowl.

Question is, how many can I realistically keep in the tank? We have an uncle with a pond that says he can take some of the fish. I'm thinking we could keep 2 of them

We have 2 red chinese goldfish (2.5 inches), 1 bog standard goldfish (2.5 inches), 1 shubnkin (2.5 inches) 2 Sarsa comets (3.5 inches & 2.5 inches) All sizes are without tails. Also should this be done ASAP or do I have any time to prep my son over choosing which fish to keep :(

You need a pond
Get digging :p
I don't think my landlord would fancy me digging a pond in his courtyard. :X

Even if he did, it would turn into a doggie swimming pool.

There's always Mom's house in the suburbs though. :shifty:

EDIT: I live about 200 meters from the Sea Lion pool at Lincoln Park Zoo, can that count as my pond? :dunno:

Cometcattle get your mum to have a pond then she can do the work and you can enjoy the fish when you visit

Joby make your son a pond in the garden he can have loads of fish and you can have the pleasure of watching them.

Easier said than done, Cat. ;)

Joby, the common shaped goldfish (commons, comets and shubunkins) need to go into a pond. Tanks are not suitable for these.

I am afraid you can only have one fancy goldfish in that size of tank, you could maybe have 2 with excellent filtration and regular water changes but I am not sure. 2 goldfish should really have 30gallons/113l and I know that your tank is only a little under that's why I say maybe 2.

I am not familiar with chinese red goldfish, are these common goldfish shape? If so I am afraid these should really go in a pond as well. Then perhaps try a fancy goldfish and a couple of weather loaches or a tropical community (perhaps a better idea to be honest).

21 gallons can house a Goldfish in theory, but if you consider they get to 12-14" its not really a suitbale home, out of the ones you have if any I'd keep the normal Common Goldfish and provide the Comets and others with the pond as they are more active and require more swimming room.

Trying to get everyone to have a pond cheese :p

Dana do you have room for a pond? :p

Hmmm I don't know what the council would have to say about me digging up the 2 x 2m square in my 'garden' (the rest in concrete, nice).
