2,000 Liter Discus Tank

Excuse my typos, spelling and general dyslexia! Pressing the wrong keys, not being able to spell and having a condition does not make me stupid! I was fortunate enough to be born stupid!

Well that looks quite interesting :p I don't understand all of that stuff though unfortunately. Maybe one day. I hope it doesn't take too much fiddling before you get it just right!

Hopefully if I plan everything as best as I can now it will help to prevent any pitfalls later. I want to try to be sure the water balance is right. Not so much for the fish, which is the easier bit, but more for the plants. I am planning a lot of plants of various types and so really need to be sure the water and lighting is spot on.

The tank is full of water already and the filter is running so that it can mature over the coming couple of weeks. So with luck, when I get back and do the planting it will only need a little fiddle

I got wood!

I needed to find the right wood for the scape I have planned. I want to try to create a heavy branch look, and will cover it with moss, Java ferns and Anubias. Took some rummaging through a big pile of bogwood, followed by 12 rounds of haggling over the price. I had some smaller pieces of wood at home, which I have had soaking for over a month now, and they will help finish off the look. There will be a good amount of rock required also, but I have a plan for that and will talk about that later.

So I arranged the wood scape in the tank and filled it with water to be sure it doesn't dry out and become all floaty! One bit wasn't so keen on staying submerged, so I drilled a large piece of slate and screwed it to the base of the wood, and that kept it pinned down.

Tank photo isn't great, because of the reflection, as I haven't installed any lighting yet, but you can get the drift.....I think.

Beautiful home and fantastic tank!!

That piece of wood is very impressive, very good find. - mind you, they certainly didn't seem short of a few decent pieces.

Looking forward to seeing your journey progress :good:

Even if in a slightly jealous manner :D

Gorgeous wood! Hope it didn't cost too much :p

Thanks Shelster, and don't be jealous we can all share this together

. I am hoping to be able to swap some ideas when I get into the planting, etc. because there's always things I won't notice, or don't think of.

There was a huge mountain of bogwood, but I need it to be just the right length.......and you know it was buried at the bottom of the pile!!!

It wasn't too bad, that big bit and the tree stump on the right hand side cost me about 60 bucks together. I think we started at a hundred and I did my best haggling! Was like a episode of Pawn Stars!!...........And no I was not Chumlee!!!

 I suppose that's not too bad! Good job! :D Can't wait to see it filled with water and plants!

Sounds like you are making good progress on this.

Am fairly impressed with your Co2 setup. Nifty bit of work.

Liking that long piece of wood you haggled over for, worth it I reckon, does add a lot of depth and interest to that tank.

Keep up the good work

Tomorrow I hope to have an interesting update to do with the selection of stones I will be choosing to add to the scape. Weather permitting! I will go to collect the stones, as long as the rain eases off!

My jealousy wont allow me to post any other words than these: You lucky man.

Dude, I am not unaware of the fact that I really could not do this normally. I am born and bred in the UK, and have had tanks since I was about 10 years old. I was living in Scotland a few years back and had a Jewel Vision 260 with 8 Discus, and it cost a good chunk of cash. OK, this tank was not cheap, but there is no way I could have dreamed of doing this before. So I really, really want to get it right, and make something super special. I want to sit and stare at this thing for hours once its done. So I won't cut corners, but at the same time I will be looking for solutions to finding cheaper options while achieving the optimum results. One of the biggies will be the lighting. I have been looking at metal halide, but they are crazy money, and think I might have found a great alternative.........will explain later.

Don't want to keep this to myself, and hope it might be even a little inspiring, and also swap some bits of knowledge. I welcome any ideas!

Yeah, the halides are very expensive and more so to run! Ive seen people DIY LED strips to the inside of the hood, they are cheap, super bright, awesome effect and cost next to nothing to run!

Thanks man. The halides would cost close to a grand, and actually the ones I have seen here are pretty ugly to boot. What I have found are some nice large regular light units which I can suspend from the ceiling above the tank. Then I plan to fit the largest energy saver daylight bulbs I can get. I have seen 250w equivalents, and I think 3 of these should do it. The light units are 10 quid each and the bulbs 10 quid each, so it would only be 60 all in. If for some reason they don't work out then I haven't made a big loss. Also the plants I am planning, Ferns and Anubias etc. are low light lovers anyway. One way or another we'll get it worked out.
