African Dwarf Frogs would be a wonderful 1 gallon tank resident, no more than 2 in that tank. They do not need any land, they are pure aquatic frogs, though they do come up to the surface for air. If possible a soft substrate is best, as they often dart to the bottom after a trip up for air (this is a defensive tactic. The frogs dives down to the bottom as fast as possible to avoid being spotted by a predator). Though fine gravel without sharp edges is also fine. Feed them food that sinks and give them someplace(s) to hide so they feel comfortable. A plant or two would be fine. Be careful about putting larger rocks/stones in the tank, they love to dig and can get trapped under rocks and suffocate. Any more questions can be best answered (and maybe already have, I haven't gotten that far yet today) in the Frog forum. Good luck!

Thanks for the info Dan :) The thing is I want to make it a 1/2 water 1/2 land(gravel) kinda setup. Is that possible, and also can I use sand instead? How many inches of the substrate do they need?

Also any recommendations on are good plants I can get for my tank? Java fern? Amazon sword? And can I add a sucker fish in there too, and just go with one ADF? Or do they do best when they're in pairs or more...

I've got some very good shaped stones from the beach that I would like to shape into a cave, any ideas on what might be a good glue to use? Silicon gel perhaps? Thanks for all your time and your answers you all, I really appreciate this...

Cheers,

For a 1 gallon tank I would not add any kind of "sucker fish" at all. I would go with the two ADFs. You could do half land and half water, but this would use a lot of tank space and you would be better off with just one frog who will not use the land area anyhow, so unless you want to get a semi-aquatic frog/toad, just stick with an aquatic setup. I have no knowledge of semi-aquatic frogs, so I can't say if a 1 gallon tank will be enough. The frogs don'e need a deep substrate at all, anything from .5 to 1 inch will be great, just try to make it soft sand or rounded gravel, like I said before.

For the rocks, you can use any silicone sealent, so long as it is aquarium safe. There are meany sealents sold that have mildew preventatives and other addatives that will be toxic and fatal to aquatic life, so be sure not to use any of these. Make sure any you get is either aquarium safe or safe for food surfaces. These will not have the toxic addatives.

I am not sure about plants, I have not yet "graduated" to live plants in my tanks.

Thanks for your reply Dan. I found out the name of these "sucker-fishes" are Otto. I've got a thread up in the Amphibians forum about my future 1gallon which I've decided to make into a home for my future ADFs. Lot of info in there, if anyone has any advice to offer please post it in that thread.

Cheers,
