1970's super filter

Back in the 70's when I was fish keeping
, The fish stores used a canister filter to clean their tanks. It used a powder as filtration. Anyone know the name of these filters and do they still make them

Are you referring to diatom canister filters that use diatomaceous earth to filter extremely small particles in order to polish the water?
