Well, i have found out that the smallest Piranha found in the aquarium trade only grows up to 6". They look stunning, and interesting to feed. So, my question is - would two maybe three of these Piranha's fit in a 36" x 18" x 15" tank?

- 35uk, 42us Gallon
- 159L

Pristobrycon calmoni. ;)

Are you referring to Red Bellied Piranha? If so I would suggest only one for a 42 gallon, 55 gallons for two. They are cool to feed, but they are not really that aggressive, it can be hard to see them n the act of tearing apart fish or what not.

Even at 6" I would say the same. They do perfer to be in schools, but I have had Piranha do good by themselves before.

I doesn't seem to be worth re-homing all of my fish for just one Piranha, are you sure i can't some how fit in two? Actually, maybe a nice large Piranha would be fine, is a Red Belly ok in that size tank?

Hmmm I wouldn't go with the Red Belly, they get a bit too big. They need a fair amout of swimming space, so having two in there wouldn't leave much room. There are other fish that eat fish , that could go in there. If thats what you are interested in.

Thank you for the advice, i was actually thinking about only having one Red Belly, or two of the smaller species (Pristobrycon calmoni).

I'm interested in predatory fish, something quite large and aggressive in behaviour, the Piranha has always caught my eye. Stripping flesh in a matter of seconds is incredibly impressive, whilst entertaining to watch, i am talking about frozen food of course, not the live kind. :)

I find watching them eat frozen food isn't very entertaining. Even Guppies will attack frozen food. Piranha's dont really show off their eating habits too much, with mine I would have to sit 10 feet away on my bed before they would come out and chase the goldfish. I'm sorry, I sorta did a crappy job of wording my last post. I meant I would only go with one of the smaller speices or Piranha.

I couldn't bring myself to feed them live fish. Are insects ok for a Piranha? Not as a staple, just a 'treat'? For example, locusts.

So, just one of the smaller species? Interesting, i shall have to see how this is going to work out. I'll try to find somewhere that stocks my Piranha, and then re-home my fish, drop me a PM if anyone is interested in my fish (sig).

Thank you for your help, Ripley. If you don't mind me asking, how do you perform tank maintenance?

Most incest are ok for fish. I wouldn't get a fish that eats fish if you dont like the look of them eating the fish. When you say frozen food what do you mean, like bloodworms or like mice?

Prawns, mice, any meaty food that is no longer living. Any other options on frozen foods?

Pretty much any meat products. Mine would eat chicken hearts and beef heart, worms and what not. From your stocking list there, it looks like you have a pretty nice tank, are you sure you want to just have one fish in there? Lol.

I figured a change would be nice, i may have to think it through a little more, but my decision is almost final. So, just about any meat product? This should be fun. :hyper:

It's 3:26 AM over here, i need my sleep. Thank you for all of your advice, i'll be back on tomorrow. :good:

You'll most likely be disappointed in piranhas if you buy them for their ability to strip flesh in seconds. Especially Red Belly's. They are one of the most scared and timid fish there are.

For a tank that small if you should choose a piranha I would suggest a Serrasalmus sanchezi. They can be very aggressive in most cases. For a large predator that will kill anything else you could get a Serrasalmus rhombeus but you'd have to get one that's already grown or wait about 10 years for him to grow up a little bit. prepare to spend up to $800 for an almost full grown one though if you can even find one available. They don't breed in aquarists tanks and are shipped in directly from SA.

Again, I wouldn't get piranha for this reason because trust me, you'll be tired of them and want to get rid of them.

As far as the Pristobrycon Calmoni, I've never heard of anyone ever having one before or anyone even able to buy one. Not saying you can't but would be interested to know where you are getting yours.

Based upon that and the fact of their closer relatives I most definitely wouldn't have more than 1 in a tank until more is learned about them unles you don't care about spending the money.

I think you're generalizing too much.

"Piranha's" don't prefer to be in shoals. Most of the Pygocentrus like to have their own with them for safety etc and is ok to get more than one but very rarely, almost never, do the serrasalmus like to be together and they will kill each other if they are.

Not just any meat like was mentioned above. I would stay away from beef heart but if you want to feed them that I wouldn't feed them beefheart more than once a month.

Any raw whitefish meat is ok. Red meat is not good for them.

Octopus, squid, tilapia, catfish nuggets etc are all good for them. Hikari pellets (my rhombeus even loves flake foods)

Please dont feed your fish Mice, Save it for the snake :good:

Gatorbait Covered everything else :D
