I am currently making plans on making a 15 foot x 10 foot x 8 foot tank, and was wondering how I would go about making it.

The front and the 2 sides are going to be glass, and the back and the bottom is going to be cement. Also, the front 2 corners are going to be cement pillars.

The tank is going to be in the basement of the house, and the top of the tank is going to be able to be viewed form the next floor up.

I was wondering how I would go about attaching the glass sides to the cement?

Any ideas?

Thanks guys!

Not real sure, but I would imagine that silicon will stick to a rough surface as well as it would a smooth one. I would build a frame to support the glass in place while the sealant was curing.

1) Wow.
2) The aquarium calculator says it's 8,977 gallons.
3) I have no real expertise in this area, but I'll give it a shot anyway.
4) Perhaps leave a channel or notch in the cement to slide the glass down into? It would give more strength, and you could still silicon it in there.
5) Once you're done, can you build me one?

Right, the frame is going to be made out of cement, so the glass is not going to be going anywhere, I am just trying to get an idea how to attach the glass to the cement, and like you, I was thinking silicon.

The only problem I see with silicon is that it wears out over time, and I would not want something that big to wear out.

Thanks for your response!

Any other ideas?

I just noticed that too, I changed it to 8977...lol.

That notch idea you have is a good idea!

Yeah, I already have plans to make it, maybe I will post them up here sometime?

Thanks fir the video, that is one HUGE tank, you would need like a community swimming pool pump just to filter all of the water. Oh yeah, and a fire truck, or 10 to fill it up, lol.

Yeah, I hope Silicon will work, I will have to get a really heavy industrial grade silicon.

Anymore inputs towards the topic?

Thanks guys for the replies thus far!

might be worth contacting Jonathan at monster fish rescue and see what he used to attach the sides of his tank, I know his is only 1500 gallons but it may help you get an idea. He put the thread on here about increasing his 800 to 1500 gallons.

From what I've read about this guy in the past, I might be hesitant to give this advise. Sure, he could provide helpful info, but he might see this as a challenge ("OMG, someone else has a tank bigger than mine!") and he'd start up another construction mess to build his tank even bigger. Let his bank account rest in piece, if just for a little while, lol

LOL

Well, money should not be an issue in a couple years.

I sent him a PM, just to ask him my original question, just to see what he will say back.

Thanks again for the reply!

Hmmm... your glass is gonna need to be a LOT thicker than regular aquarium glass, or it will burst under the pressure from the weight of that much water.

Got some photos? (of what you've done so far anyway).

What are you going to PUT in it?

i know this doesn't contribute to answering your questions but...

WOW :hyper:

i'd love to see it when it's done. i'll pay $10 for admission lol

you should do monsterfish rescue if your in uk to get a variety and to do a good cause

What an awesome idea :good:

Just mentioned it to hubby as he used to work in the construction side for Bostik & has done specs for large glass constructions.

He recommends that you need to have a mechanical joint where glass meets concrete, ie the slot in the concrete to hold the glass, as concrete is pourous (I cant spell this morning, sorry) & the silicon adhesive wont be as strong where it meets the concrete.

He said you might want to have a look here: www.cwct.co.uk its apparently full of info & knowledgeable peeps who will be able to advise on the type, thickness etc of glass & the best adhesive to use, they have specialist knowledge on the technology & specs of glass which has to withstand various variables ie temp, pressure etc, so it might be worth a look.

Good luck with your project, you will have to start a diary on here for us to all read.
