Leave the tank lights off if you don't have live plants, use just room light. If you don't have a background, get one, and cover the sides of the tank, black plastic garbage bags work well for this. Try to limit commotion in the room.
I once read that you can train koi carp to get used to you and eventually feed from your fingers .Its a long process and you need to sit near the pond and gradually get closer etc.
I would assume you could addopt the same process with your fish . Maybe you need to spend a little more time in the room with your fish so they can get used to you being in the room, not just for feeding and the occasional e-mail check.
Then when you have spent a little time at a distance then gradually move your presence nearer for a few days , taking time togradually build up there confidence with this figure being in the room with them .
Its not an easy process but with time they will get used to you and all will be well.
buy very small sinking food (granules). add food and stand around watching while they eat. eventually they'll make the connection that "big scary thing" = "super awesome things to eat"
I'd go for the food-bribe option too- if you feed them a teeny pinch every time you're passing the tank then thats what they'll learn to associate you with!
