120 Litre Planted

I'm just a bit wary as I'm new to heavy planting so didn't want to add fish, relying on the plants to process the waste, in case any plants died off due to insufficient ferts/co2 etc. Just because I've not done it before. I know that sounds a bit daft and that I'm being overly cautious

Kane I'd say that angels were top dwellers. Think my tank would be a bit too crowded with angels though. Lampeye killies do look lovely though!

Lampeyes aren't tiny, they get big enough to eat Cherry Shrimp, get about 2" long sometimes. I had 20 to start with but after some jumpers and noticing them eating my juvi Cherries I got rid, shoal brilliantly tho and are gorgeous when under good lighting, yellow/gold with turquoise eyes.

That's what I thought about the lighting. Seeing as I've got high lighting I imagine they'd look great! I wanted a shoal of top dwellers rather than one or two bigger fish. May have to try and source some :) I don't have cherry shrimp so I'd be fine, or anything else really tiny.

On another note, I can't decide between amazon frogbit and salvinia natans for a floating plant. Opinions anyone? :)

Awesome thanks :good: salvinia natans it is. I've never had either, so was going off search engine photos. Think of going over to the pressurised co2 side too. :)

Day 9 water checks: ammonia 0.6, nitrite 1.6, nitrate 50. Ammonia dosed back up to around 4ppm (4ml.)

would you like me to move this into the freshwater section???

Us planted folks don't tend to fishless cycle our tanks, and you may get better advice in there.

Entirely up to you Ian. I wasn't sure which section to put it in, as it is going to be planted. I just wanted to cycle it to be on the safe side. Like I said, I'm new to planting so will probably need to play around with co2 and ferts to get optimal plant growth, so I wanted to make sure I had plenty of bacteria as well to process waste. If you think it'll be better in the freshwater section, I'm more than happy for you you move it. :good:

It was just a thought, if you know how to fish less cycle then I'll leave it, but if you need more advice it would be better in there. I'll leave it up to you.

Oh I see what you mean! Yep I know how to fishless cycle, I posted it in here hoping to get some advice on plants mainly, as well as general comments and ideas. I've had some great advice so far!

Out of curiosity, what do you think of my plant list? I'm planning to set up pressurised co2 now, with ferts and root tabs. I have 2 x 24w t5s, which come on the tank as standard. I wanted some different colours and textures, and all of the ones ove listed seem to be fairly easy to care for?

Not sure if i should throw a spanner in the works or not, but....have you thought about removing the big internal filter that's taking up loads of space and investing in an external filter that will give you a better turn over? Just a thought :)

I did consider it, but I figured I'd see how I get on with this one first. It's cost a fair amount already  but it'll be worth it. You removed your Juwel one didn't you?

It never had one in the first place, came with a 305 filter when i got it. Its an easy job though, only stuck on with blobs of silicone.

Ahh I see. ok, well good to know it's an easy job :) will see how it goes. Just looking at co2 equipment so need to spend pennies on that first I think. Have a feeling most of it will be coming from hong kong from fleabay. :hyper:

Sounds like you are jumping in at the deep end! :)

The only piece of got from HongKong was my brass bubble counter. The rest came from lunapet on eBay. I don't even use my Co2 anymore, might have to move it to another tank :X

If you are putting in Co2, you might want to look into a powerhead to move it around the tank, eliminate dead spots.
