im conditioning my betta for breeding and im gunna do 100 pecent water canges every 2 days should i take all the water out and put her in a seperate bowl or will that stress her to much or should i leave just enough for her to swim

p.s. yes i no this sounds like a stupid qquestion but i want to do i right

That sounds great, you want to do 100% every three to four days, so for conditioning every two days sounds like a great plan

Well I`m thinking 50% a week is fine
No, it's not :sly:

In an unfiltered small tank, it is important to clean the tank all the way out. Otherwise, your fish is sitting in ammonia-filled water that gets ranker as the months go by. If you use an ammonia locker, you still will eventually get a high level of chemicals from that in your water.

Fresh, clean, warm water is vital for a betta's health.

regular smaller changes have the same impact. In the breeding tank you need to make sure the tank is kept perfectly clean during the mating process.

I have found that having live plants in the tank makes a mess so wont be using them again.

No, actually they don't -_- If your tank isn't cycled, which the majority of betta tanks aren't, then no matter how many partial water changes you do, you will eventually have a toxic amount of ammonia build up. In an unfiltered tank 100% water changes are an absolute must

yes, i totally agree with sorrell and cation on this matter, always 100% for unfiltered tanks ;)

im sure there is also drawbacks to 100% changes. Probably stressful on the fish during transport or removal of water and getting used to new water? Risky with improperly aged tap water. Plants will help alittle but water change is still a must.

A partial water change is good and will reduce the ammonia levels, but ammonia will keep building up, so ultimately a full change is needed. Example:

1G Tank with ammonia created at the rate of 1ppm (figures are just wild guesses)

0 hour - Ammonia level = 0ppm

+24 hours - Ammonia level = 1ppm
50% change Ammonia level = 0.5ppm

+48 hours - Ammonia level = 1.5ppm
50% change Ammonia level = 0.75ppm

+72 hours - Ammonia level = 1.75ppm
50% change Ammonia level = 0.87ppm

+96 hours - Ammonia level = 1.87ppm
50% change Ammonia level = 0.93ppm

Hope this helps.

I have heard though from another breeder, a good way to induce spawning is to mimic nature. After a fresh rain, the bettas want to breed. To mimic this after conditioning, I don't change my bettas water for the normal time period, a week usually which isn't enough for a 1/2 gallon, but hey, I haven't noticed any ill effects yet. Then, when it is time to change their water, they go in the breeding tank with brand new fresh water, and it's like a new rain and they spawn.

yah have you ever noticed that whenever you change the water the first thing the boys do is build up a big nest? i don't consider it stressful at all to the fish doing 100% water changes, bettas are tough mutha's a lot tougher than many people give them credit for. mind you, we always age our water a couple of days before changing.

Altough I know 100% water changes are inevitable, I am at a loss as to how often to do them (I vac daily so I make small 10-20%) water changes since I need to top of after a gravel/bottom vac.

I am still at a loss of how often this needs to be done.

One of my friends though, 12 betta's (1x HM, 3x SD, 3x VT, 2x Plakat, 3x Female SD), and she only does partial water (20-30%) changes in unfilterd 1.25G and 2.5G tanks, every few days (3-4 days) and her fish are all healty. I think mine actually get sick more.
