10 Gallon Stocking Ideas/betta Sorority?

While a 10 gallon is big enough for a betta sorority, I do not advise it for anyone that has not kept multiple bettas before.  Females are aggressive and there is not really much room for error in this type of tank stocking.  A lot of research is needed before even attempting this type of scenario.

IF you attempt this sort of scenario (which on your other thread I cautioned you against it), you need to have at least 5 females.  Females can work in a pack mentality which is why it is better to have higher numbers.  It keeps one or two of them from being picked on relentlessly.  This does not mean that it won't happen but that it reduces the possibility.  Getting a group of females from a breeder that are either sisters or have been kept together previously is the best way to start out as they normally are not as aggressive to each other.  Notice I said "normally", not always since one the females are placed in a new territory -- things change.

With your other question -- yes you can mix tail types (not breeds as you called them as they are all the same breed).  Females normally do not have the big fins that the males have and most times all the female tail types look the same except for double tails or crown tails to a person not used to picking them out.

I second what WB is saying... I've been researching for months and am still researching it.  Also, as she points out in the other thread about this, I am buying my bettas from a breeder, so they are all related (to a certain degree).

i have been thinking about this for quite some time. but earlier on I decided against it because I only had 1 10g tank. now I have a 3g, 7.5 g, and 2 10gs. my tankis heavily 'planted' with lots of silk and plastic(i tested them) plants.there are no breeders around me, and i do NOT like the idea of animals in the mail. the girls would probably be from petsmart or petco.possibly this other non-chain place.

Thinking about something and researching something are totally different.

Regarding the 'animals in the mail':  How do you think that the LFS gets their fish?

you are right, research and thinking ARE completely different things! i guess what i meant to say was; i researched it a long time ago, then decided against it.THEN i started thinking about it again. NOW i have done a heavy amount of research(and i am still researching)  and so i am THINKING about it again.

Attibone has a photo journal about his betta sorority in the betta splenden section of the forum ... Called betta cottage or something similar. If you haven't already read it, I think it would be good since it goes through his setup and stuff as well as problems he has encountered.
