10 gallon aquarium

My friend wants to set up a 10 gallon aquarium for his son. He wants to start out with only 1 or 2 fish, and then get more if he decides he likes it and wants more. Any suggestions? The only thing I could come up with is a pair of platies. Any other suggestions? and an algae eater to go with it?

If its going to be a newly set up kids tank then you'll want somthing small, hardy and undemanding in diet like various livebearers, female bettas and corys. Platys are actually a good idea but you'll want an all male group as otherwise they'll produce fry for as long as they live and if a female dies that will make the genders unbalanced and lead to more harrassment from the male.
I think 3-5 small male platys and 3 albino/bronze or peppered corys would be a good starter mix . You could try some otos instead of the corys but they can be very fragile in their first couple of weeks. Tell them how to do a fishless cycle as you'll be able to set the tank up quicker and run less risk of getting dead fish from ammonia or nitrite issues.

something to get your friends son really into it 1 male dwarf gourami and 2 females thats what I started off with and there 5 yrs old now and maybe 2-3 panda corys hope it works out

Maybe a swordtail pair??? Guppy or 2, mollies???...any would be great!
Snails are good 2! Helps keep the tank clean. Maybe get a large one?

no bristlenose plecs in a 10g, as they need a 20g long minimum.

corys are definitely not good starter fish, as they are not that hardy. and unless you want to be overrun with fry, i wouldn't get any livebearers (you could get a few males though). otos need a mature tank with lots of algae.
