Hi,

My girlfriend wants to get a pair of kissing gouramis for our 10g community tank which has some zebra danios, neon tetras, and occo.. err.. small catfish thing.

I think she is nuts. Is she?

Everything I read says "bad idea" but figured I would run it by here before I tell her no which is not something I enjoy doing much :).

Regards,

Artuk

Well, most people say kissers get agressive when they get older, but I have never found this to be true. Maybe I was lucky to get mine.
And second, thay will outgrow that 10 gallon. I have a kisser that is 9 1/2" so that would never fit in a 10 gallon. They look cute as babies, but they will quickly outgrow the space.
They are great fish, but not good for small tanks.

HTH!

as anna said, they do get quite large, so they would enjoy being in a 10 gallon :(

but look on the bright side, your girlfriend want them, so you could always buy a new, bigger tank :fun: and she shouldn't mind, as long as you put some kissing gourami in :)

Yeah, that is what I did. I had one to begin with, and wanted another, so I had to get a bigger tank.
Here is a lot of info on kissers.

I definitely used that for my "bigger tank agenda". Although I want a very large salt water for myself, I think maybe a mid sized 30-40 freshwater could be in the near future.

The info in that link was interesting, I had no idea they ate plants. I definitely want to have lots of live plants in any future aquarium so that will be something I need to consider too.

Thanks for all the info!

Artuk

Yeah, they will eat some live plants, but mine have never. My big one never touches anyone, and the smaller on is content on sucking the algae off the glass. But they will grow up to eat some live plants.
A 30-40 should be good. I don't think they usually grow as big as mine.
Kissing gouramis are great fish, so enjoy yours!

i have 2 about 4'' kissers they are alright, they chase my guppies sometimes but other then that they r great :kana:

Hi Artuk! I have had three sets of kissing gouramis and they are one of my favorite types of fish. I have read that they can grow to be as much as 12", mine never got past about 5". Either way, You wouldn't have nearly enough room for them in a 10 gallon community tank. Good luck pressing your gal for a bigger tank! :)

Hi there,

Do you not think that you should get more neons to keep your single neon happy? Everything I've read about these advise at least 6.
