1 Dempsey, 1 Polleni, 2 Raphael Cats...good Mix?

From what I've been told, the aggression of Jack Dempseys is severely over exaggerated on most websites and such. I'd be a Tad worried about putting them in a tank with a truely aggressive fish. But once again, the other fish in question is one that I've never heard of
I agree as the only time my jacks have ever been aggressive was when they spawned. I watched my 3 inch female have a go at my oscars to protect her eggs. She had those oscars cowering in corners. When there is no spawn involved, they are pretty docile fish IME

what do you keep with your Dempseys? My tank is also a 55G so it would be great to have your advice...

Mine are alone as they are a breeding pair. When they spawn they will kill or seriously injure anything they deem a threat. BUt they used to have oscars as tank mates, any type of syno catfish is good.

thanks for that, love catfish so syno's would be a welcome addition...perhaps just one male Dempsey rather than a breeding pair, as I wouldn't want any harm to come to the catfish...is a solitary Dempsey a happy Dempsey would you say?

Ive never had one alone so I do not know. My breeding pair actually came as a surprise. I didn't know they were a pair until they spawned.

every time I look at your Dempsey journal I find I am determined to have a breeding pair! So may have to wait for catfish until tank number two comes round...thanks for your input anyway :good:

I never saw them attack bottom dwellers. But if you want to breed them, I hear that plecs and catfish will eat eggs at night when the guard is down on the eggs.

I am a little put off by the size issue with the giant danios then as I really don't want to overstock...with you on the pictus catfish (gtreat fun to watch), but is there not as problem with adult cichlids trying to eat them and getting a mouth full of spines for their trouble? Are there any cats that you are aware of where this wouldn't be a problem?
A full grown pictus is around 6 up to 8 inches long, and very very agile,I highly doubt a Jack Dempsey could catch and eat even a 4 inch one.

The danios wouldn't over stock, you could probably get a group of 12 or so as long as somebody can back me up on if they'd become food or not.

great, seems I have some good options here, thanks for all the helpful advice people :good:
