thats not true.

even a hump forming when the con matures isnt a sign that its a definate male.

the only way ive found to be consistent is in males the bottom fin touches the back fin (dnt kno names of fins) by a few milimetres where as the females stops jus short.

you could just wait until they spawn and look at which lays the eggs....

samUK - generally fins are longer and more pointer in males like the anal fin which you said was the only reliable way......

and as for nuchal humps, i have seen females with them they can be reliable depending on species.

:good:

huh? are you talking to me?

i kno what sex all mine are :)

and i sed the hump isnt a reliable way of telling a male with convicts.

This is a link to the Convict Cichlid profile in the TFF Fish Index

i dont know what ph is and when people say the water has to be hard

pH is a way of knowing how acidic your water is.
some fish like water that is more acidic and so we keep them in water with a pH that is lower than 7.
some fish like water that is less acidic and so we keep them in water with a pH that is higher than 7.
some fish like water that is perfectly neutral, so we keep them in water with a pH of 7.

most people's tap water has a pH between 6 and 8, which is perfectly ok for convicts. convict cichlids are from Central America where most of the water is just a little acidic.

"hardness" is a description of how many minerals are dissolved in your water.
"hard water" has a lot of minerals dissolved into it and is generally less acidic.
"soft water" has hardly any minerals and is generally more acidic.

convict cichlids come from an area with mostly "soft water" and do not like a lot of minerals. unless your tap water has a funny, metal-like taste, then you don't really need to worry about how hard your water is.

champ, do you know anything about the nitrogen cycle? and did you learn anything about biology in high school or middle school?
