donya, i just noticed on further inspection the red sea star does indeed have little pores all over his top surface, i dont know if this makes a difference to your origional identification. Mat.

I will get those pics up when i get home as i really wanna know what they are now, trouble is i have to find them first the sandsifter burries himself so might have to wait till lights out when i feed him to get a photo, the orange star is just very good at hiding in holes that are inaccesable...

Understood, and some good advice with species etc i will try and get some pictures of the stars up when i get a chance, although im fairly familier with stars and i have a red brittle to make direct comparisons with, my sandsifter is the classic grey with black markings and can be observed...

I was viewing it primarily as a added security for my live stock, should i have a compatability issue between any tank mates and also should any problems occur with the stars it would be an area already loaded with their food in an emergency, i dont know which method i would use i am quite keen...

Thanks, i sorted it today i went to a very good local fish supplier who had a lighting display on a tank where you could switch different tubes and observe the fish (very good idea i think) So i have a 50/50 pink/deep blue and a 50/50 actinic/white, its perfect for me all the colours show...

Thanks for the advice, the tubes are next to each other so 2 50/50 bulbs should alternate like you said, so i will try that and if i need the red i could maybe add an led strip or sqeeze a regular 8w t5 tube in there for red as thats about all would fit.

i think you may be right, i have done some googling and it seems to be a brown algea outbreak (apparently normal) also says i should get some snails etc to take care of it. but is it still to early for snails?
